I was talking to a Cardinals fan at work the other day, and I started to mention that I hated Ryan Theriot, and then I stopped because I realized I was talking baseball with a random person and that always sucks. Then I tried to remember why I hated Ryan Theriot and couldn't come up with a good reason other than "he was overrated by certain types of fans." But now I have a good reason. Thanks, Ryan.

My favorite Theriot moment was the mass hysteria from the common fan on Cubs.com and other various blogs following his trade. You would have thought the Cubs got rid of Sandberg in his prime. I also enjoyed the less version this winter when Sam Fuld was traded.

"La Russa preaches selective aggressiveness -- lay off the bad pitches and swing at the good ones."

This is the kind of sage instruction that Theriot just couldn't have received anywhere else.

I've barely spent any time in the Chicago area the last twelve years, so this site accounts for all of my exposure to Cubs discussion. When I would visit, it always threw me off that complete shock/confusion was the only response I ever got to expressing any negative opinion or feeling about Theriot.

Well, to be fair, it's better than "It's called 'hitting', not 'walking.'"

Yeah, 'cause when I look at Theriot, I see a frame built for pounding the ball into the gaps and over the fence.

He is the second coming of Augie Ojeda, so we will probably see him on his 36th birthday.

The secret to LaRussa's success: play good baseball, and don't play bad baseball.

Who knew?

He will be mediocre at best this season and I will enjoy that after watching that stretch where he didnt take a walk for two months. But yes his comments smack of sour grapes for a guy who cant face reality. Know your role.

Based on the radio discussion down here, it appears that LaGenius will be putting Theriot in the leadoff spot to start the season. I love it when his love for grittyness and inability to be wrong rear their ugly heads.

So far, Theriot gets my vote for MVP. 1-5 with a crucial error in the 11th that lost them the game. Also, Pujols got booed quite a bit!

Haha seriously? Pujols got booed at Busch?!?

Yeah, he played like crap though... 0-5 and hit into like 3 double plays.

He's so going to be a Cub.

Pujols' performance was so funny that it inspired my dad to not only get a facebook account, which was surprising enough, but to write on my wall and end his post with a "lol," which almost floored me.

The schadenfreude is strong in here. Holy crap, did Theriot kill your dog?

I mean, I'm glad he's not at SS anymore either, but seriously? Even when he was here I never understood the extreme hatred that was thrown his way. Yeah, all he hit were singles and he wasn't a very good fielder, but I don't think it warranted this level of venom.

That on its own doesn't.

The attitude he goes around with though... that's what pushes him over the edge.

Ryan Theriot wears affliction shirts. He took the Cubs to arbitration for the first time since the middle ages after he put up a monster .712 OPS. He's really bad and he badmouthed the Cubs and praised the Cards organizations once he got there. He deserves every ounce of our disdain and I will relish every bit of his unwitting sabotage of the Cardinals' season.

Ditto everything they just said. Plus, living near St. Louis, I hear Cardinal fans talking about how it's like the 2nd coming of Eckstein... but better. Just makes me smile inside (and outside) to know he's no better than a bag of flaming dog poop on Ted's front porch.

I appreciate how you included wearing affliction t-shirts as the first item in your list of grievances.

yeah i was a pretty big theriot defender when he was cheap and not acting like a d-bag (besides wearing affliction t-shirts), but he became more expensive and started playing worse, so it was time for him to go away. some of the stuff he's said since leaving has been embarrassing. sorry pal, you're just not that good a player.
