how many running backs in history have gained 1,000 yards on the ground and 500 yards through the air in the same season? that's pretty impressive and shows just how versatile forte is.

I don't know about all time, but last year 5 out of the 17 runningbacks that gained 1,000 yards also had at least 500 yards receiving. Two others were above 450.

that has to be an anomaly.

Yes, an anomoly. In 2009 there were only 2 (including Chris Johnson who went for 2,000 yards rushing and 500 receiving) with no Forte. In 2008 nobody did it. The only person who did it in both 2009 and 2010 was Ray Rice. I skipped back to 2003 to see what it was like several years ago and 3 people did it that year. From looking at the lists, it seems to be that a decent number of players have done it once or twice, but they rarely do it more than that. That's partly because most runningbacks even if they are good receivers have to be in a certain type of offense to do it. Faulk did it 5 times (including a 1,000-1,000 year).

Bears might be interested in Brad Smith:

Certainly someone who is solid as a 3 or 4 WR, a good returner and can mix things up on offense, but definitely not the big WR splash I want.

Of course as a Mizzou guy I want him though.

Wrong Jets receiver to be interested in. :(

We are the last team that needs someone who lists 'good returner' as part of his upside. Especially given the new kickoff rules.

All the news out there suggests that the Bears won't be after a big named WR. If the Bears won't go after a big named WR in a year where they have a ton of money to spend, and there is an especially high number of names out there, they will never go for one. Sadly, most of the news suggests that they won't go after one.

Now I am a person that believes you can win without an elite number 1 WR. But in a situation where you can afford one for a couple of years, why the hell not? Especially when your WR corps is really young and struggled in the NFC Title game last year against elite DBs (also a team that's on your schedule 2 times this year)

Sidney Rice (6-4)

Braylon Edwards (6-3)

Mike Williams (6-5)

James Jones (6-1)

Plaxico Burress (6-5)

TJ Housh (6-2)

Malcom Floyd (6-5)

Our WRs on the roster are: Bennett (6-0), Knox (6-0), Davis (5-9), Hester (5-11).

“I’m thinking Danieal Manning will probably move on,” Harris said. “I got to play with Danieal for two seasons, and it’s been a pleasure playing with him. But I think he’s gonna test his chances in free agency. I would really love to see them sign Double-A, Anthony Adams. He was a cornerstone for our defense. And he’s a great guy in the locker room. He’s like the team jokester. Everybody loves Double-A. There’s no way you don’t like him.”

Probably not worth a lot, but John Clayton has an article listing the Bears as a dark horse for Braylon Edwards. Also a dark horse for Brandon Mebane because of Ruskell's association with the Seahawks....

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6783433/nnamdi-asomugha-headlines-2011-free-agent-class

I was just about to ask what people thought of signing Mebane. As much as I want Henry Melton and Matt Toeania to be capable of holding down the DT position, we could certainly benefit from an upgrade. I don't know much about Mebane though other than apparently he's a run stopper. Can he be the three technique DT for the Bears? He only had 1 sack last year, and 10 for his career (5 seasons). I know that's clearly not the end all for a DT but I wonder if he's only a run stopper.

Yahoo sports has a list of the top 100 FA's. Mebane is 42.

Brandon Mebane

DT / Seattle Seahawks

Age: 26 | Exp: 4

A four-year starter, Mebane was a durable force before missing four games with a calf injury last season, and Seattle's run defense really struggled in his absence. He offers explosive penetration from the three-technique spot. He is strong, aggressive, quick and makes things happen. His ability to play both DT spots increases his free-agent value.

Davis is a FA too. Only 3 WR are signed, unless you count CFL great Andy Fantuz. The Bears have to sign A WR just to fill out the roster.

But I'm with you. I'm not even asking for Rice, Holmes, or Edwards (though that would be ideal and is feasible). But there's no reason the Bears shouldn't go hard after the 2nd tier guys like James Jones, Jacoby Jones, or Mike Sims Walker.

Brad Maynard has been notified the Bears aren't interested in re- signing him

He was a great directional punter his whole career, but in the last couple years he was good in every direction but forward.

Yeah, this was needed. I'll think I'll gladly sacrifice his directional for someone that can boom it down the field.

This was a no brainer. He was awful at times last year. Useless in all situations except pinning an opponent, which was was still decent at. Would be cool if Robbie Gould could somehow punt, so we could keep Brad for directional punts.

Then again, as was mentioned before, that might entice the Bears to keep punting on 4th and short from the 40

I bet this makes Idonije a sad panda.

I sure hope we get at least a couple decent pieces considering we're so far under the cap. WR is a must. We've all been patient waiting for JA to rebuild both lines but the time has come to get Cutler an actual target out there. I say Rice, Edwards, Sims-Walker in that order. Anyone else would either be a bad idea or just more of the same with the exception of Holmes and MAYBE Santana Moss.
