Former top draft pick of the Cubs has signed a minor league deal.

The Cubs signed outfielder Lou Montanez to a minor league deal according to Baseball America's Matt Eddy (on Twitter). They drafted him third overall back way back in 2000. Montanez hit .223/.257/.323 in 266 plate appearances with the Orioles over the last three seasons.

Couldn't just one of them have worked out? Sheesh.

But, getting Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez from a couple of those guys made the pain go away just a little bit.

Kelton, Montanez, Hill, and Choi. Its going to be a DYNASTY !

I still have my 2001 Baseball America Prospect Handbook that lists that as our infield of the future. For the record, it also listed Juan Cruz, Ben Christiensen and John Webb as future members of our rotation and Zambrano as our future closer.

There's a blast from the past. Wonder how his life has turned out. Was it a college or minor league game that he rearranged that guy's face in the on deck circle?

College. Hit Anthony Molina in the face. I know he got drafted too, but I'm pretty sure he never got any higher than A ball, if he even got there.

His professional career consisted of four plate appearances in independent ball (Evansville Otters, Frontier League) in 2000.

Ben went to my school, Wichita State. Still talk about him/the accident a lot here. Awful that that happened.

Can you really call it an "accident?"

It was an accident in that he wasn't attempting to fracture his skull. Probably wasn't trying to hit him in the face period.

But he did intend to throw the ball at Molina's head. I think "accident" is a fairly dubious term to describe the situation.

If I recall the details he was ordered by his coach to throw at Molina, but that still doesn't excuse it. He should have known it was wrong and not done it.

i played little league and youth basketball with anthony molina. he wasn't a nice kid. i could see him timing his pitches just to be a jerk instead of for any strategic gain.
