Lou Holtz chimes in:

“My attitude was if that athlete wasn’t good enough, and he was doing everything we asked him to do –- in the classroom, the weight room and the football field -- and he was not good enough to play, then that was our mistake.

“Now, if he’s a dog –- he won’t go class, won’t get in the weight room, or is a jerk just trying to play the system. Then that’s unfair to the rest of the players on the team who are busting their butts.”

I asked Holtz what he would do with a “dog” player.

“I would sit down with the young man and write up a contract. I said I’m not having this contract done to get rid of you, because I’ve had ample reason to do that already. This is one last chance to straighten your life out. You’re going to do `Boom, boom, boom’ whether that be academic or weight room. Then I had his parents sign it.”

So what happened next?

“I usually didn’t have any problems with a kid after that.”

I have heard this morning that Akina is actually on his way back to Texas already.

Yeah, I'm hearing that now too...sounds like that is a done deal.

That's surprisingly coherent. I'm impressed.

“Now, if he’hs a dog –- he won’t go clashs, won’t get in the weight room, or ish a jerk jusht trying to play the shyshtem. Then that’sh unfair to the resht of the playersh on the team who are bushting their buttsh.”

“I would [expletive] down with the young man and write up a contract. I shaid I’m not having this contract done to get rid of you, becaushe I’ve had ample reashon to do that already. Thish ish one lasht chance to shtraighten your life out. You’re going to do `Boom, boom, boom’ whether that be academic or weight room. Then I had hish parentsh shign it.”

So what happened next?

“I ushually didn’t have any problemsh with a kid after that.”

No, he just called a press conference for himself days after everyone else committed. It's still a douche move for an 18 year old

Or he had not made a decision, nothing says you have to commit by signing day. They would have had a press conference for him regardless of what day he committed.

good point. he didn't have nearly enough time in the 2 years (or more) that he was being recruited. But with an extra 7-10 days, he was finally able to wrap his head around this decision.

Well considering he said he was planning on going to Clemson a couple of weeks back, yeah he might need to take a couple of extra days. What exactly is wrong with that? I would much rather see that than the the guy who decommits a couple of days prior to signing day or flops back and forth with his commitment.

wrong with it? compared to all the other "look at me" recruiting games? probably nothing. but i'm not sure it's any better than the hat game. he called a pc after signing day when he'd have even more of the spotlight (b/c being the #1 recruit wasn't enough). i'm not sure he's worse than most, but i don't think it's deserving of praise either. it's still attention seeking behavior - if you don't like the hat game and the several decommitments, why is a post-signing day pc better?

All I said was I'm glad he didn't play any hat games. He did drag it out 12 extra days to his birthday when everyone close to his recruitment knew he was going to South Carolina. That was nothing but attention-seeking and unnecessary.

im way too cool and manly to care how a bunch of teenagers choose to announce what college they're going to. that seems like a real redflash kind of tree-murdering thing.

I think that Toomer's Corner thing is really sad, but holy [expletive], that's funny.

If it happened to a school other than one I attended, I'd probably laugh at that Avatar clip...the guy who did it has kids named Chrimson and Bear and a dog also named Bear...lmao. On a brighter note, a group of Alabama fans is raising money to help Auburn deal with the situation...8k so far which I doubt will pay for much, but it's something positive...

Yeah, there was actually a little piece on this in yesterday's Red Eye. Pretty cool.
