Eh. It's not the Yankees or Red Sox out there buying up all the FA's. So I'm kinda ok with it.

It'd be kind of funny if spending a bunch of time pining after free agents only to see them go to Miami became a thing. Who do the Bears want next year that the Dolphins can take away?

Was having this conversation earlier with a buddy at work.

The Blackhawks do kinda miss Brian Campbell right now, even though they'll be glad to be rid of his contract in the long run.

I'm perfectly fine with it. But I'm not fine with purposefully tanking 2012.

Someone a page or two back already posted a pretty reasonable 2012 roster that didn't include any of the major free agents.

There's a dozen little places for the Cubs to get better in 2012. The rotation gets healthier, we stop hitting Baker against the wrong-armed pitchers, we make Tyler Colvin go away.

It's not tanking to pass on overpriced, big-name free agents. If they are overpriced. I'm still hopeful on Fielder.

Overpriced? They very well could be at the end of their contract but prior to that time you've given yourself an opportunity to compete. Without signing them you're hoping to provide yourself an opportunity to compete that may never come along.

It'll really hit home when Vincent Jackson signs with the Dolphins in the offseason.

Everyone's overpriced at some point.

It'll really hit home when Derrick Rose is traded to the Heat in the offseason.

Not necessarily while you are paying them.

Don't massacre her fantastic work like this.

I can't think of more than a handful of times I've laughed as hard at anything as I did at the blog post that image came from.

The Panthers have a lot of former Blackhawks players too so that's kind of the same thing too.

Put me on board with what jersey said. Watching people who a month ago were preaching not overpaying in years and/or dollars for fat/old 1B now starting to panic is entertaining.

Aggressive Marlins pushing Pujols camp for a decision soon, sources say. They want answer. Might not come today though.

Sveum addressed the rumors Albert Pujols has been offered a 10-year deal by Miami, which would put him out of the Central Division, assuming the Cubs don’t sweeten the qualifying offer they reportedly made to the Cardinals’ slugger.

“That’d be nice, if we don’t have him, no doubt about it,” he said. “I had to witness it over the last six years, what he can do. It’s pretty impressive. He’s definitely the best hitter in baseball right now. What he did in the playoffs speaks for itself. If he’s not with us, you hope he’s in another division, no doubt about it.”

Sveum said he had no knowledge of the Cubs’ pursuit of Prince Fielder, but acknowledged he’d probably be part of the recruiting process if it gets to that point.

“He’s just one of those special guys that come around once in a lifetime,” he said. “He should’ve played the game in the 1950s, 60 and 70s,m when guys played every day, played as hard as they possibly could every single day. They cared about winning. They cared about their teammates. Prince is all those things.”

I kind of don't like Sveum.

I can understand not wanting to go beyond five years for Fielder, but I can't imagine realistically believing that five years will be enough. I know I'd rather give Fielder a six and/or seventh year than give one of the pitchers a sixth and/or seventh year next year. Unfortunately, I think the Cubs have little choice but to do both thanks to the current state of the major league team and upper minor league players within the Cubs' system.

Six years on Fielder doesn't bother me. Even seven I could bite the bullet and do.

Eight-plus is too much.

Coincidentally, he is also very, very, very good at baseball.

[expletive] I read the last couple pages backwards. A couple pages ago you said something about not being upset if we don't get prince or Albert but that doesn't mean you are cool with not trying this year.
