There's a guy for Fox Sports Florida saying that Pujols to Miami is done.

Yea. Some no-name young kid who is praying he's right so that he can attempt to claim that he broke it if it happens. So take it FWIW.

Pujols leaving STL and Fielder coming to Chicago would make me very happy.

Seconded but that is in a perfect world. I still don't see the Cards losing Pujols and I suspect the Cubs involvement is just to drive the price up for a division rival (ala the Yanks and Crawford last year).

Who was the guy who guaranteed a Pujols press conference in STL last month?

If we sign Fielder and Pujols spurns the Cards to bankrupt the Marlins, well, that would be fantastic.

Also, let this 10 year offer be true and then it turns out he's 35.

Wouldn't that be cause for voiding at least part of his contract, if they wanted?

Not surprisingly, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution hears that the Marlins would trade Gaby Sanchez if Pujols lands in Miami (Twitter link). Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune thinks the Cubs would try for Sanchez in that scenario.

No thank you.I don't know how much of an upgrade Sanchez would be over James Loney, and while I'm all for taking risks, knowing the Marlins and the fact that Sanchez is a productive player, he will be by no means cheap. They'll probably want to start at Szczur and McNutt.

STL going well past the point they are comfortable to keep Pujols and Fielder coming to Chicago would still make me pretty damn happy.

Meh. He wouldn't be an awful backup plan if we miss out on Fielder. Can still OPS over .800 with decent defense.

i was on board with this trading for sanchez idea until i realized sanchez is going to be 28 and he's not very good.

Well, he would be better than LaHair.

I don't think the Cardinals will bump their offer up. They might have, but the way his season played out may have planted the seed of doubt regarding his production going forward. That, along with the fact they really don't have the money.

I have thought they were preparing for life after Pujols in Holliday and now Berkman.

If they're significantly outbid, they'll lose him. And don't forget to take into account the lack of state income tax in Florida. I think there's a legitimate chance this Miami thing goes down.

Possibility of opt-out clauses in play with Pujols and Fielder ... Would give them a shot at New York/Boston/Chi/LA markets in 2 or 3 yrs.

Huh?

He's saying that those teams are not a factor and they would want to opt out after a couple of years so they could sign in those markets.

Which is ridiculous because the Cubs have an assload of money to spend and a wide opening at their position.

Huh what? An opt-out clause puts them right back out on the market, presumably when the Yankees are beginning to move past some of their DH stockpile, while Boston may need 1B/DH help and while the Cubs would obviously be without a legit 1B. If Florida gets him, that gives them 2-3 years of credibility, excitement and another potential playoff run, and then eliminates long-term cost.

Huh?

Assuming he means there'd be player options involved... from years 3 onward?

Also, I highly doubt 1B in Boston is gonna open up any time soon.

Or that they'll collapse in Sept, fire their long time manager, and their long time GM will leave for another team.

DH might.

No, but DH will and 3 years down the line, Albert might be more willing to do that.

If Albert wants an opt out after 2 or 3 years, then maybe it's feasible that he accepts a 5 year deal with the Cubs. Unless he really thinks he's gonna fall off in the first 3 years of his deal and wants to protect himself for the next 7 years.
