Does anyone think, knowing how close of a source Kenney supposedly is for Kaplan, that Kaplan was acting on something more than blind hope with that Pujols jersey?

Not saying he knows they're going to sign him or anything like that...but that he might have been tipped off a while back that they are planning to make a major run at him.

He was tipped off that the Cubs were going to fire Jim Hendry replace him with Theo Epstein/Jed Hoyer and they would decide to pursue Pujols?

The GM makes most of the moves but something as big as this has to go through Crane first.

Because Kenney has to be making the decision to know of ownership's plans, of course.

A major signing like Pujols is a franchise altering decision and could be something Ricketts has had his sights on all along. It does more than just improve the team on the field.

Sorry to pile on earlier. :)

It is possible that Ricketts does have this in mind and could have talked to Epstein & Hoyer about it when recruiting them. It would have made for a nice selling point, for certain. I don't think it's very likely that this is the scenario, but it is a possibility.

Because a doofus like Kaplan having a Pujols jersey is any sort of evidence that he was clued in the Cubs were going to sign him.

I thought most of us agreed that Kaplan, while a dumbass, has decent sources (the main one being Kenney himself).

Kaplan having decent sources when he reports rumors is one thing. Extrapolating his shopping choices into what FA the Cubs will pursue is quite another.

Pretty sure I didn't say that he knew anything based on that. Just speculating aloud.

Obviously, it could just as easily be a dumbass fan randomly buying a jersey with the name of a great player he wants on it.

Or, because said dumbass fan is closely tied to the team's then president, and now president of business operations, maybe there's a 5% chance he knows it is something they've been very interested in doing all along.

This was posted as pure speculation...no reason to jump down his throat that much.

Of course, I'm just looking for anything supporting Pujols coming here, too.

Tim, Pujols > Fielder?

Tim, Pujols > Fielder?

At what contracts?

With no contract diff, Pujols is obviously >>> Fielder.

Given the likely contracts and age differences...I'm guessing it will be pretty much a wash. They'll each be valued according to reasonable future projections. If one gets a contract out of whack with projection, then the other one is preferred.

I just want one of them.

Does anyone have even feel the slightest bit dirty by wanting a guy we loved to hate for so long jump ship? I mean, he WAS a Cardinal. It just seems so wrong.

As I said, Favre to the Bears or Jeter to the Red Sox would be similar.

Not at all. I've respected Pujols for pretty much ever. Dude is not only one of the 10 best baseball players ever, but also does tremendous community work.

I felt much worse cheering for Edmonds.

Like I said, it's just seems odd. No doubt he is one of premier players of all time. I also have a concern (and probably way off base here) that he will lose the fire now that he won his second title. He really does not have much left he needs to accomplish from a personal standpoint.

No worries. I might care if I had actually posted something that mattered in any way.

Yeah, Albert Pujols has a lot of pride in everything that he does. And as Tim mentioned, his charity work is something he's extremely passionate about and I doubt he'd let his reputation on the field go to crap. He's a role model and he knows it, and at this point I'm pretty sure he (humbly) knows he's arguably one of the greatest hitters in history and probably would like to stay that way. If he's going to fizzle out, it's lunacy to think he does it intentionally.

So we're getting excited because 1 GM thinks we will get him?

I'd say it has more to do with this part than the part where the GMs took guesses at where he'd actually end up.

But it's too early in the game to know if those teams are out there, only that the buzz in the industry is that the Cubs, Marlins and Rangers are gearing up to make a run at this man.

The most encouraging thing about the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies not being in the running is that the Cubs may not have to overpay by nearly as much to land one. Of course, there could be another Rangers-ARod incident with either of them, but even less likely that both get bid up to ridiculous proportions.

In summary, the Cubs may actually have a shot at landing one of these players for near their net worth over the deal.
