I am not sure exactly how he fits on a 5 man bench. He would fit perfectly on a 6 man bench (but that era in MLB is pretty much gone and the Cubs are not exactly the type to have 1 less pitcher than everyone else). If he is willing to play in the minors he would be good insurance as well.

I would guess this would be a standard Hendry/Veteran minor league contract where they will grant the players release by a certain date if he's not on the big club.

Press Release:

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Reed Johnson have agreed to terms on a 2011 minor league contract with an invite to major league spring training. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Johnson, 34, returns to the Cubs organization after spending the 2010 campaign with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Johnson played two seasons with the Cubs from 2008-09, combining to bat .287 (143-for-498) with 31 doubles, 10 home runs, 72 RBI, 75 runs scored and a .348 on-base percentage in 174 games with Chicago.

Last season, Johnson saw action in 102 games with the Dodgers and batted .262 (53-for-202) with 11 doubles, two home runs and 15 RBI.

Johnson is a career .281 hitter (781-for-2783) with 156 doubles, 18 triples, 54 home runs and 321 RBI in 886 major league games with Toronto (2003-07), the Cubs (2008-09) and Dodgers (2010).

I mean - what's it hurt. Righty bat that can still hit lefties well, play CF passably, good clubhouse guy..and he's not guaranteed anything. We're gonna need a 5th OF for the bench. I dont know for sure it's gonna be Reedo, but i'm glad he's got a chance to be with the club.

Bench:

Hill/Castillo

Baker

Barney/other SS NRI

Fukudome

Reed/F. Perez

Thats how i'm reading it right now, anyways.

This is an alright move I suppose. Cubs bench now looks like this:

Hill/Castillo/Ramirez-C

Barney-2B/SS

Baker-IF

Fukudome/Colvin-OF

F.Perez/Reed Johnson/Brad Snyder-OF (do they need a fifth outfielder though?)

D*MN! Beat by 2 minutes. haha.

Just saw headline on Tribune about "fan favorite Reed Johnson returning" and it dawned on me that this is some sort of PR move more than baseball. Every year they have to drum up interest around the convention and prior to ticket sales. This year they weren't able to go out and get any big names and the biggest trade they made involved giving up a lot of talent for a ho-hum guy who isn't going to sell tickets. They sign Wood, bring back Reed Johnson, resign Koyie Hill (who a lot of people like for some reason) all in time for the convention.

Garza is far from a "ho-hum" pitcher. If being named an ALCS MVP and tossing a no-hitter before he hits his prime is boring in your book, man I'd like to learn what a good player does.

Pena isn't chopped liver either...

I think goony was looking at it from a masses perspective. The casual baseball fan isn't going to get really excited by Carlos Pena (he hit .190 last year, which casual fans will find important) and Matt Garza, who most of them probably haven't heard of (pitched in Tampa, after all).

Both are good players, but neither is a "big" name.

If names like Garza Pena and Wood don't move the excitement meter, then Reed Johnson sure the heck won't.
