Which coach has the guts to try an onside in OT with these rules? Belichick and Haley?

Rex Ryan

He talks a lot, but does he actually do those types of things on the field? I know the other two have no problem going against the status quo with stuff like going for it on 4th down.

Didn't Andy Reid do an onside kick on the opening kickoff in Week 1 a few years ago? Granted, the stakes are a lot higher in playoff games ...

He had that crazy fake punt deep in his own territory on 4th and a mile earlier this year didn't he?

Ryan tried that stupid fake punt vs. the Bears. I don't know his history though. I could see him doing something like that. I wouldn't mind the Bears going with an onside kick, depending on the team they were playing.

Now what if the Eagles went ahead and kicked a FG on the first possession of OT. Then the Rodgers throws an INT and the Eagles defensive player stupidly tries to run it back and fumbles and the Packers recover. Is the game over or what?

I have no idea, but I figured I'd bump this to the new page because it's interesting.

McCarthy did the surprise onside against New England to open that game up and he also did it in the playoff game against Arizona last year when it became apparent that our defense couldn't get a single stop.

I'm starting to think he'd do it in OT with the new rules because of our crappy special teams and good defense.

Yes, because the rules state each team must have a chance at possession, and an onside kick (along with a muffed punt, but not a fake punt) constitutes a chance at possession.

It's a risky move (because you're basically conceding a FG, forcing you to score on offense to prolong the game), but the payoff is huge.

my favorite was several years ago against the cowboys when akers made a poor onside kick to start the game, the dallas player grabbed it and ran it in for a touchdown. three seconds into the game and we were down 7-0.

Nobody mentioned Lovie...with good reason. When was the last time the Bears tried a surprise onside kick, or faked a punt/FG for that matter?

I'm starting to feel like the Eagles might win this weekend. The Packers are getting way too much love. PK calls them one of the best 6 seeds in history, which is kind of silly, considering that they finished 10-6 (one game worse than the 6 seed last year, Philadelphia), lost 3 of their last 6, can't run the football, aren't all that great at stopping the run, and haven't played a down yet in the playoffs.

The Packers are a good team, but the national media are really willing to overlook their faults.

It's the same thing as last year when we were getting a lot of love before our game against the Cardinals. That's one of the main reasons why I don't feel too good about this game.

Agreed. One thing I'm interested to see if what they do with Woodson. If they blitz Woodson every play like they did last week, and like has worked for other teams vs. the Eagles.....then I think they can potentially get killed by Jackson and/or Maclin.

Asante Samuel vs. Greg Jennings is also a fun matchup. But I don't think the Eagles can really stop the Packers. Their other DBs can be exploited though, and I look for Driver, Jones, and Jordy to have good games.

Well, the Packers are a 6 seed that is top 10 in both offense and defense. I think they've got solid units for that low a seed. That's probably one reason why they are getting so much love.

Plus, people tend to think that superior QB play will show its value in the playoffs, and Rodgers is a top QB.

That said, they're one dimensional on offense, and we've all seen them put up tepid performances such as in the Lions game, and even last week against the Bears.

They're flawed, but so is everyone else.

I give up trying to predict this stuff. I've got the Eagles in this game but I really have no clue what is going to happen.

The Packers lost those 6 games by a combined 20 points. Has there been a team in history whose average margin of defeat was lower?

they have the 2nd best point differential in all of football, despite a tough schedule (like the rest of the NFCN)

just means their coaching sucks and their quarterback isn't really a hero-type.

Really? Is that a real question? I'll just give you some of the easy-math answers:

1984 49ers: 3

1998 Vikings: 3

1985 Bears: 14

2004 Steelers: 17

This year's Ravens lost 4 games by a combined 16 points, so they were right there with the Packers in margin of defeat.

Bored, so I thought I'd post a game preview for the Colts-Jets:

The key matchups to watch aren't, in my opinion, the matchups everyone expects. The Jets have a strong running attack and I'm sure they'll run for some yards against the Colts. However, I think the Colts run defense will at least perform competently, to the point the Jets won't win the game solely on the ground. The Colts have shored up the run defense with (i) more/stronger/healthier play from Antonio Johnson and (ii) more gap discipline from their linebacks (read: the return of Gary Brackett and the emergence of rookies Kavell Conner and Pat Angerer). Note: It's why I'm not terribly concerned about the health of Clint Session, while he is the most physical and likely most talented Colts 'backer, he is also the least disciplined. The issue the Colts' defense is likely to have is stopping the pass (seriously). If Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis cannot consistently generate pressure, the secondary will be abused even by the likes Mark Sanchez. There are simply too many injuries in the secondary -- even more so with Kelvin Hayden not likely to go -- for the Colts to hold out for any length of time in the backfield.

The Colts offensive production will depend on how much they can run the ball. That's not to say they will, or even need to, dominate on the ground. But if they're getting stuffed for negative plays, or no-yard gains, every time they run the ball, they are going to struggle offensively. With no credible running threat, I don't believe they have enough weapons to beat the Jets solely by passing. The Jets secondary isn't great -- especially their safeties -- but they have one great and another very talented corner. If the Jets are able to somewhat neutralize Reggie Wayne (a Pro Bowler because of stat aggregation, but not his best season -- see the rate stats) and, to a lesser extent, Pierre Garcon (the epitome of an unreliable, inconsistent player), it will be hard for Jacob Tamme (who is a solid player, don't get me wrong) and Blair White (not a bad fifth receiver, but still) to beat them over the middle. The Colts must have some rushing attack --no small task against the Jets defense.

In sum, I think the Jets will (surprisingly) have a big passing day and limit Manning's ability to win the game through the air. The Colts have also historically struggled significantly in their playoff openers (if they happen to beat the Jets this weekend, I think they'll have a very strong chance of upsetting Pittsburgh). I'm going to the game, I have great seats (twelfth row, lower level), and I wish it wasn't so. But, Jets 24, Colts 20.

you're being purposefully dense. nowhere did i suggest that.

why do we all freely accept pythagorean record for baseball as a much better indicator of the quality of a team's performance, but you're seemingly shrugging off point differential like it's [expletive]?
