After watching bits of the preseason games last night, I already hate the new kickoff rules. There's going to be a ridiculous number of touchbacks.

Has there been much talk about how much this can reduce scoring? With no kickoff return TDs, and very little chance for decent field position after a kickoff, teams are going to be forced to move 80 yards for touchdowns.

Not much since the rule was actually implemented. That was the reason why they considered moving it to the 25 with a touchback (which is something I bet that will be brought up again). It really shouldn't reduce scoring that much though. It will hurt field position after a kickoff, but that means it will improve the opponents field position after a 3 and out. So it might reduce the number of 38-31 games with lots of kickoffs, but in most normal games with a mixture of kickoffs and punts the field position will balance out.

But the 20 provides a nice cushion against the types of punts that set up real good field position.

I don't remember the change, is everybody on the kickoff moved up 5 yards? Just the kicker?

Kickoffs are now from the 35 yard line. I assume that moves everybody up.

Seems like this change will just create more gambling on running it out of the endzone. Saw one that got ran back for a TD last night. The next one was run back to the 40. Maybe the 5 yard limit acts as a neutralizer for the extra 5 yards the kicks will create.

That is most definitely a play full of fail.

Also, Thomas won't enjoy watching film with his teammates when they replay him getting owned by Tebow's stiff arm not once, but twice.

Wonder what Meph thought about that play...

Fox just showed that when the kickoff line was moved from the 35 to the 30 in 1994 the touchback % went from 27% to 7%.

I'm guessing we're going to find that kickers have much better legs now.

edit: 25 teams had better than 7% in 2010, with 3 having more than 27% and the average being over 15%.

"You cannot pick up the quarterback and try to body-slam him. This is not the 1950's."

Didn't feel like keeping this in the "Potential GM" thread over in Transactions? 8-)

I'm not sure the last time the nfl had a must-watch defensive player, maybe LT, but suh is pretty much in that category

I pretty much hate the Steelers, but Polamalu fits that category for me.

Greg Lloyd... That guy was fun to watch. They should've had a mic on him every game.

Early/mid 90s had a lot of defensive guys that were fun to watch, not sure if they were "must-watch" though... Carnell Lake/Steve Atwater to name a couple more...

Can't forget Bryan Cox. The 12 year old in me still laughs at the fact that, at one point, the Dolphins started Cox and Beavers at linebacker.

Anyone who wouldnt have megatron in their top 10 WRs is a complete moron. Calvin Johnson is probably my favorite non-Bear NFC North player, he is just a beast. With a real QB (stafford?) he would put up Randy Moss 2007 numbers.

That list is absurd. Desean Jackson averaged like 3 catches per game last year.

CC seems like one of those guys that isn't far enough removed from his playing career (or isn't mature enough) to check his ego and give credit to certain guys. He just sounds petty.

49ers fail at recreating The Catch. Link

The 2011 Niners failed to repeat history. Alex Smith, scrambling to his left, was sacked -- two-hand-touch style -- on fourth down inside the five-yard line, inspiring a crescendo of boos.
