i know that everyone has a laugh over the "slider low and away" line, but it seems to me that the negative comments from most people who are anti-steve stone came after he left the cubs booth and not while he was in it. is the hatred (perhaps a strong word) for stone due to the events in 2004 and how he's talked about the cubs since then or were there incidents before then that made people not like him?

Stone became insufferable when a bunch of dumb fans fell in love with him because he could make such basic observations as throwing breaking balls low and away when ahead in the count. I don't know if it's the fans faults or his, but it has nothing to do with 2004.

Frankly, I don't want him to be straight play by play. I like the humor and side stuff that he brings. Lets be honest, there's a lot of time to filll on the radio, and being funny and entertaining is a key component of making an interesting broadcast. Pat does PBP great, but he also does the rest of it.

Plus, Pat always takes an inning off. That means someone else would have to come in and fill in for at least an inning every game with nobody there to help him out. Everything about a solo booth is a terrible, terrible idea.

I'm not saying I want a one-man booth. I'm just saying it should go back to being a baseball broadcasting team and not the "Pat and X Show" schtick. Hughes was great at making the best of a bad situation with Santo, but that doesn't mean we should be looking for another incoherent ex-Cub for Hughes to riff off of.

Has there been any indication that either the Cubs or the fans are looking for that?

i hate stone but i would definitely consider it due to the fact that white sox fans would absolutely die if they were spurned by him.

stone is like julia ormond in legends of the fall, the sox are aidan quinn, and the cubs are brad pitt. which would make the orioles the kid from ET that died horribly years ago.

They threw Piniella's name out there, didn't they?

I like Sutcliffe, if Brenly would leave he would be my TV color #1. Steve Stone can kiss my ass.

I want an Ex-Cub.

Stone is an ex-Cub.

You are insufferable. There wasn't any schtick that caused Pat to miss a pitch or a play. IMO, That's one of the things that made them a great team. Pat would paint the picture with words and in the background Ron was saying/grunting everything I was feeling.

People are way over-reaching with Ron, he wasn't that bad and no worse than most "color" men on the radio. One thing with XM was that I got to listen to most other teams' radio guys and by and large they are terrible.

No, he was pretty exceptionally terrible.

That is simply not true at all. I listened on numerous occasions without having any idea what was happening. Between the goofing with Ron, substitute play by play man (which is a ridiculous perk) and 7th inning guest, there was plenty of time when play on the field took a back seat.

You appearently don't listen to much baseball on the radio.

Sure I do. Ron was in a league all his own. And I'm fine with that

Its not like stone just started predicting pitches, bunting situations, outfield alignment, etc toward the end of his tenure. He always did that and the majority of cubs fans did not find him insufferable as a result. I amongst others wondered why stone knew what was going on but our know-nothing managers remained clueless. If anything everyone complained about chip carrey who was indeed pretty bad. The tide changed when Stone spoke his mind in 04. I surely don't remember anyone on this board complaining of Stone before that.

It's easy to pretend to know more than the idiot managers when your "decisions" don't actually result in something happening and you can't be called out on them. Two things happened with Stone. One, all the kids that watched him and liked him in the 80's/90's grew up, and he became a bitter dick.

This board barely existed before that

Yes, mostly the latter. Cub fans would still have liked him after they realized there wasn't anything magical about his schtick. But then he insisted on being a turd. That was the end.

To be honest, if I had the 2004 he did, and the manager and players were more concerned with me than what was going on on the field and it made my job hell, I think I'd have taken potshots on the way out the door as well.

But he always knew when the slider low and away was coming...

So you guys are ripping on a color analyst for *gasp* analyzing a game? The nerve of that man to actually give some insight into a baseball game!
