Surely there's got to be a former player who's entertaining that they can get to do it.

I'd "audition" people throughout the first couple months of the season and give whoever does the best job the gig FT.

Pat as a "one man booth" is an awful idea. Part of his charm is how well he plays off the other people in the booth. Pat tormenting Ron was always hilarious. I think you'd lose a big part of what makes Pat entertaining without another person for him to play off of.

Yeah, he's a quality straight man and most of his humor is the somewhat surprising and subtle digs he takes when he appears to be Mr. Nice Guy.

Plus, it's disingenuous to compare it to a "Vin Scully" because he doesn't do radio. Whole different animal, I'd think

Also, Vin Scully is horrible and should not be emulated under any circumstances.

Hughes a freaking fantastic straight PBP guy. He got stuck doing the "play off Ron" shtick because Santo was so awful 99% of the time that it was the only way to make it entertaining.

I really hope they just get a simple color guy and let Hughes go back to being an actual play-by-play guy, a job at which he is fantastic.

Am I crazy, or does that seem like a list of names that Sullivan just came up with by himself?

Frankly, I don't want him to be straight play by play. I like the humor and side stuff that he brings. Lets be honest, there's a lot of time to filll on the radio, and being funny and entertaining is a key component of making an interesting broadcast. Pat does PBP great, but he also does the rest of it.

Plus, Pat always takes an inning off. That means someone else would have to come in and fill in for at least an inning every game with nobody there to help him out. Everything about a solo booth is a terrible, terrible idea.

Agreed. What makes Hughes so good is that he's able to give detail of the action while also injecting a little humor. I have no doubt he'd still do a good job alone in the booth, but it just wouldn't be the same experience for the audience.

Mitch Williams would be the worst from that list. Mark Grace would be fine and probably preferred to most on that list. I don't want him to ever do TV for the Cubs. Stick him on the radio where he and Hughes can have some fun, I don't have to hear him all that much.

i know that everyone has a laugh over the "slider low and away" line, but it seems to me that the negative comments from most people who are anti-steve stone came after he left the cubs booth and not while he was in it. is the hatred (perhaps a strong word) for stone due to the events in 2004 and how he's talked about the cubs since then or were there incidents before then that made people not like him?

I loved him as a kid. When he left and came back though he began looking like a major douche. And his over-the-top negative statements about specific Cubs players, feeding the Kaplan beast, just shows what a petty ass he is and what little amount of baseball insight he actually has.

I lost it with Stone after Harry died. I think they were a great team because Stone had to play second chair to Harry. I don't think Stone wants to play 2nd chair anymore. I didn't watch many Sox games last year, but I am surprised that Hawk and Stone can co-habitat.

I think part of what makes Pat good was that he and Ron made a great team, I wonder if Pat will be as good with someone else?
