I honestly think this has as much to do with the Panthers holding the top pick as anything to do with labor issues. Nothing to base this on really, but I could see Luck wanting to be in a different situation than Carolina's.......

I don't know about that. There were rumors he'd stay for a while - before Carolina locked up the #1 pick. He's a bright kid (and clearly he values education a bit if he's going to Stanford) a year away from graduation.

Huh...you and raw both have me incorrectly as the author of that post...lol.

Ha, that was me. Not sure how that happened. :D

I know he's a bright kid and all, but I think he's gambling that he'll get a better situation than Carolina's next year. The money factor would have been hard for me to swallow. When they iron out this next labor agreement, it's not going to have an affect on rookie salaries for this upcoming draft, correct? Or is that on the table? I thought the scale wouldn't be a factor until the following draft for some reason?

I actually quoted raw and just took out his post (was too lazy to find the original post). My bad.

This is the best day of Blaine Gabbert's life.

And another awful day for the Carolina Panthers.

Somebody check on Andy

Poor Andy.

Of course, Carolina's in good shape to get the top pick again next year too. There's your silver lining.

How does Stoops keep getting them to come back at Oklahoma? First Bradford, McCoy and Gresham. Now Broyles and Lewis. Admittedly neither are 1st round locks but you'd think they'd be more wary after Bradford and Gresham got hurt.

The draft will happen as scheduled but the contracts won't be signed until a new CBA is agreed to. Thus, the rookie cap would be in effect for the 2011 draftees.

Will rookies get paid less with the new CBA? --Bill R.

Yes, certainly at the top of the Draft. Sam Bradford was the last bonus baby in the history of top picks in the NFL. Bradford can max out at about $78 million. The next top draft pick in the NFL will probably max out at about $20-25 million.

Nah, they still got Jimmy Clausen.

Well, with that being the case, money won't change for him, barring a catastrophic injury or pitiful season next year. He either really wants to get his degree now(which can be done at any point in the future too) or he doesn't want to play for the Panthers.

His possible perfect scenario: Panthers keep Clausen and he shows ENOUGH next year to warrant them taking something other than a QB at or near the top. The Niners go with a stopgap this upcoming season, suck badly, and finish badly enough to where they have the ammo to trade up and take Luck.....

I love that picture. Jimmy Clausen almost seems like a character out of a John Hughes movie.

assuming they don't trade their 2012 first round pick next year to move up and grab a I-AA quarterback in the 2011 second round.

The Carolina Panthers Train Wreck continues. We'd better work on getting an offensive line.

I kinda want A.J. Green with the first pick. Bowers is sensible, but we've got to give Clausen someone to throw to, and the rotting corpse of Steve Smith is not going to do it.

BTW, I guarantee that no matter how bad Carolina might be next year, they won't be #1 pick bad, because these things do not have a tendency to work out for this franchise.

yeah that long and snakebitten 15 year history has been brutal.

I'm 24, so I'm playing the "it doesn't really matter if I wasn't around and aware of it" card. I've been rooting for the Panthers longer than the Cubs.

and they've won 3 division championships, 4 playoff appearances and 1 conference championship, and played around .500 ball, which is reasonably good for a team that has only existed for 15 years. the jaguars have more playoff appearances but fewer division championships and no conference championships, and the texans haven't made the playoffs in 9 years of existence.
