I can't believe Beltre is getting another big deal like this again.

I know he had a great year, but..

This will not end well.

His only real outlier year was 2004 and he pretty much played to his contract in Seattle. Take a look at how badly that park killed his numbers. His rebound with Boston was very predictable.

On top of that, he's great defensively. Offensively, he's not going to post a great OBP (unless he's hitting over .330), but he'll hit a good number of doubles and around 25 homers.

I guess my confusion is how is the ball in Beltre's court? there are MAYBE 3 teams who are trying to get him and none of which are going to go 6 years... Seems to be one free agent every year who waits until late january to sign because he refuses to be realistic.

That's pretty much the definition of the ball being in Beltre's court. It's up to him to make a decision now, as the teams pursuing him have supposedly decided they are not going to increase their respective offers to him.

Beltre apparently is getting either a 6 year deal or a 5 year deal with an option from the Rangers.

"They are still talking and have not completed the details, but an agreement appears imminent," the source told ESPNdeportes.com.

Another source said the contract probably will be for five years, with an option for 2016.

Two Dominican Republic media outlets reported Sunday on the negotiations. The newspaper El Caribe reported that Beltre and Texas would complete a six-year, $90 million deal within the week, while the website Piodeportes.com said the contract was a done deal and will earn Beltre $96 million.

If this was posted elsewhere and I missed it, my apologies.

Wow MLB contracts are back to insane again this year.

It's too much for a 31 year old Beltre, but the positive about him is that his excellent defense shouldn't fall off a cliff as he ages. A lot of his value should age well, I would think.

So what happens to Michael Young? He's getting up there in age but can still hit. I'm not saying we should try to trade for him, though, since his contract is ridiculous and we have enough of those already.

He's been quoted saying hed have no problem being moved to DH/utility for Beltre.

I am not a big fan of Michael Young, that being said... This very possibly could be a match for Soriano, Cubs could eat roughly 4 million a year to make up the difference in the extra year and take Young back, this would fill the Rangers DH spot and not create a log jam of infielders. The Cubs could slide Young to second, open up LF for Colvin/Guyer and it frees up payroll a year earlier. Offensively Soriano and Young are a wash, although I would put Sori ahead of Young slightly in potential.

I would maybe even make the package sweeter just to open up LF for the next 4 years.

To clarify the discrepancy, here's the breakdown:

Beltre gets $14 million this year, $15 million in 2012, $16 million in 2013, $17 million in 2014, $18 million in 2015 and $16 million in 2016. The Rangers can void the final season if Beltre fails to have either 1,200 plate appearances in 2014-15 combined or 600 in 2015.

Staggering to note how much money Beltre will have made as an average major league third baseman.
