Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain and Jeremy Jeffress - #4, #1 and #6 Brewers prospects respectively.

Would that be comparable to HJ Lee/Brett Jackson/Chris Archer or Trey McNutt from us?

The only problem for me though is that it feels like a flawed package. Escobar, although still young, looked pretty bad last season and has done no better in winter ball. The dude might someday turn into a good fielder, but I'm not sure he's ever even going to have a .340 OBP.

Jeffress might have talent, but he's also one strike away from being banned from MLB forever.

Cain is good and should be a quality player.

But that is a gots to do trade for the Crew. Hopefully, it's just a bad rumor.

Yeah, I'm torn on whether or not I like the Brewers getting him. From the rankings, it was a huge haul, but as you said two of the three prospects are pretty flawed. However, there's almost now way the Brewers re-sign him and with one player taking up $13+ mil in payroll, that limits the other additions they can make. Plus, that's a pretty decent chunk of young talent they won't be able to rely on for cheap production.

Agreed.

But what is really scary if this is true is that for the first time, the Brewers finally did something about their pitching. It's never been about the offense. With the addition of Greinke and Marcum to go with Yovanni and Randy Wolf, they have got two really top of the line pitchers (Greinke and Yo) one real solid one (Marcum) and what would be a strong No. 4 in Wolf.

While they probably couldn't afford Greinke after two years (if he performs well), that's two years where the Brewers should actually be legitimate contenders for the division. Even with the loss of some of these prospects, the big league club has not yet taken a true hit offensively.

Apparently Greinke is going to the Brewers, for what looks like a small package.

Curious. No one major has reported it yet, but it is all over twitter.

NatsNewsNetwork RT @BerniesCrew: Source tells me #Brewers have traded SS Alcides Escobar, CF Lorenzo Cain, and RHP Jeremy Jeffress for RHP Zack Greinke, SS Betancourt + $2M.

the brewers rotation looks pretty awesome

Yep, you got that right. If this deal actually goes through, they could make a lot of noise next season. Man, I really hope we sign Webb soon.

Greinke had one fantastic season (2009), but since then he's been a younger version of Ryan Dempster - outside of 2009 his best ERA is 3.47 and his best xFIP is 3.76. Since 2008, Dempster's ERAs have been 2.96, 3.65 and 3.85 and his xFIPs have been 3.74, 3.81 and 3.89. As for ERA+, Greinke (outside of 2009) has been between 100 and 126 while Dempster has been between 113 and 155.

Obviously Greinke is better since he's younger than Demp - I'm not arguing that - but is Greinke really the mega difference maker he's considered? Or is he just a younger version of Ryan Dempster?

Great post

I'm glad we stayed away

Andrew Wagner is now reporting that Jake Odorizzi is also included in the trade. Looking better and better for the Royals. Odorizzi put together a pretty nice season in A ball last year at age 20.

Wow...did not expect to see that

Greinke

Gallardo

Marcum

Wolf

?

Not bad

Guess they aren't trading Fielder this offseason.

Still not as good as Carpenter, Wainwright, Garcia, and Westbrook though.

Besides, the package doesnt seem that spectacular, and I really cant see the Angels, Rangers, or Yankees not swooping in at this point.

Pretty nice haul for KC if true. Milwaukee has pretty much decided to go all in with these two trades. Interesting decision since I still don't think they are good enough to compete.

Hahahaha. He's much better and younger but if you forget his best season for some dumbass season maybe you can pretend he isn't. Good analysis.

There good enough to compete, just not a favorite. Greinke and Marcum just might make them favs for 2nd place in the division, but little else. Problem is, once Fielder leaves after this season, that pretty much kills their lineup.

Looks to be official now.

Brewers Acquire Zack Greinke

By Tim Dierkes [December 19 at 7:30am CST]

The Brewers acquired ace righty Zack Greinke from the Royals, confirms ESPN's Buster Olney. Milwaukee will reportedly send shortstop Alcides Escobar, center fielder Lorenzo Cain, and pitching prospects Jeremy Jeffress and Jake Odorizzi to the Royals for Greinke, shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, and $2MM. Credit Jim Breen of Bernie's Crew with the scoop last night, with an assist to Andrew Wagner of OnMilwaukee.com.

Greinke, 27, had been one of the winter's most discussed trade candidates, with rumors picking up steam after the right-hander requested a trade earlier this weekend. During his time in Kansas City, Greinke posted a 3.82 ERA in 1108 innings, including a 3.25 ERA and 8.4 K/9 over the last three years. Prior to his Cy Young season in 2009, Greinke signed a four-year extension, meaning he'll remain under Milwaukee's control for two more seasons, at a cost of $13.5MM per year.

The move represents the second major pitching acquisition of the winter for the Brewers, who previously traded top prospect Brett Lawrie to the Blue Jays for Shaun Marcum. The Brewers had long indicated a desire to shore up a starting rotation whose 4.65 ERA ranked near the bottom of the National League in 2010. Moving a handful of young players in the two trades, while hanging on to Prince Fielder, suggests that the club feels they can immediately contend in the NL Central.
