Back to my 'we watched Joe's last game' prediction, once Pitt announces Tom Bradley as coach and he takes just enough assistants with him that Joe can't replace for a 1 year deal...

This will get... interesting.

Not a single thing you've said about Penn State the last few years has been true

I've said 2 things, I'm fairly certain, 1 of which was just a prediction (that has yet to be proven true or false, btw). I'd never be so bold to pretend I know exactly what will happen with Joe. We'll see.

The other thing I said was 100% true; there was/is an investigation that many people thought would get leaked. So far it hasn't, and I'm glad.

you know who wasn't a Michigan Man? Bo Schembechler

Exactly. [expletive] every stupid Michigan fan who keeps spouting off about the next coach needing to be a Michigan Man. It's the reason why the fan base was divided the moment Rich Rod stepped on campus 3 years ago.

Are most of these Michigan Man blowhards townies, or is the alumni caught up in this obsession as well?

I hear it everywhere on this side of the state, from alumni, wal-mart wolverines, and everyone else.

I hope Penn State fans don't expect a "PSU Man" for their next coach. I'd rather not be coached by DJ Dozier or OJ McDuffie, thanks

Everyone's got the answer. If only someone would listen :)

Talk around here is that Miles will leave this time if offered enough money from Michigan. His buyout is only 1.2 million.

If this was November, I'd hope he would take the Michigan job, but this is really bad timing if he leaves now.

Les has made a lot of game management mistakes the last few years, and I think he has lost some of the prestige, respect he commanded after LSU's last national championship. I don't think Michigan will offer him the job.

Texas is also trying to pry away Moffitt for there opening at S&C. Thats going to be tough but if there is a thought of a new regime in Baton Rouge then it might happen.

What other options do they have? Harbaugh appears to not be going there and they've narrowed themselves to just "Michigan men" apparently. As others have said, that's basically Les Miles and Brady Hoke at this point. Hoke might be the better hire (or may not be), but Les is by far the bigger name and the more prestigious hire.

I could easily see them offering him, if for lack of better options if nothing else.

Just because idiot fans are clamoring for a "Michigan man" doesn't mean they're not looking elsewhere. They're trying to make a splash, and I don't think they care where he comes from as long as the name is big enough.

Why is nobody excited about Brady Hoke? Hoke seems like he'd be a really good hire and given that he can run both spread and pro-style offenses (so I've read), could get through a few years with Rich Rod's players and transition to a pro-style down the road.

If alumni and boosters are clamoring for a "Michigan man" there's a really good chance that's where they're looking. They piss off the boosters and alumni with the hire, they lose donations.

I don't think Hoke would be a bad hire at all, but the question with him is resume. He's been very good for a little while, but is still somewhat of an unknown. He definitely wouldn't be one to excite the fan base and the biggest question would be can he win at the BCS level.

Discounting the fact that both of those guys are intelligent and know the game of football pretty well, neither of them are actual coaches, so I wouldn't worry about either DJ leaving the ministry or OJ his non-profit any time soon to coach a major football program (with zero experience). Interesting that you chose these two guys to try to make a point, is it because they both use initials as their names or something?

Also while I don't disagree with you that the next head coach will be a person who was not a former player at the university, there are a handful of good "PSU Men" out there that you should be so lucky to welcome back as assistants. Mike Munchack, Steve Wisniewski, John Hufnagle immediately come to mind. Add Munchack (OL coach for Titans) and Wisniewski (Strength coach at Stanford) and I don't care who the HC is, you will have some big, strong linemen immediately. Guys like Darren Perry, Mike Zordich, and Gary Brown are also making impacts in the NFL, and then of course you have Golden who will do well at Miami.

If Fisher stays in Nashville, I don't see much of a chance Munchak goes anywhere. The Texans wanted to interview him for the OC opening last year and the Titans wouldn't allow him to interview. I doubt they'd give him permission to interview at PSU, especially for anything other than the HC job.

You bring up the very reason for my inclusion of the whole "being lucky" bit.

I'm sure it's a consideration but a Michigan man who loses won't likely keep them happy for long.

Whoever they hire will be declared a Michigan man pretty quick if he posts numbers in the W column.

Everyone thinks they know what should be done. Everyone's an expert. It's important for the decision makers to cut through that and realize that everyone just wants to see a "W" column that is much larger than the "L" column. And that's really it.

I think keeping the Michigan fan community together is a really important issue for them. They're at a point right now where the fan support can go one of two ways. It impacts a lot of things, including recruiting. Didn't Robinson decommit at one point, citing fan negativity? Recruits really do spend time on the internet, for better or worse, and that's where they build their impressions of the fan bases. Unhappy fans in a big program like Michigan lead to program instability, which results in an inability to recruit.

Unfortunately, since keeping the fans happy is so important to the success of that program, it may cause Brandon to make a less than ideal selection for head coach.

The fan support will go wherever the wins and losses go. The Michigan Man angle is a bunch of hokum. It maybe has an effect on the length of the honeymoon period but that's about it.

After a few years, sure. But a couple of years of 7-5 or 8-4 could be be interpreted very different if it's under a coach the fans like (rebuilding) than someone they don't (hiring failure).

A Michigan guy could get a legitimate chance to build a program. I'm not sure the same is true for another outsider.
