Still pretty clueless as for the DC, but I am guessing Jerry Gray.

Rumor is Vic Fangio.

edit: The rumor is that the new DC is heading to Austin now. The guess is that it's Fangio or Miss. St. DC Manny Diaz.

Looks like Texas has brought in Bo Davis from Alabama, could be an interview but this late in the process it must be pretty serious. Rumors are that they have a tentative agreement with Chryst as well.

What type of timetable are you putting on getting Texas back to a BCS level program?

2012 or 2013 at the latest. I am hoping for 8 wins next season, and competing for a BCS spot the year after. #2 recruiting class last year, currently #1 this year and the level of HS talent for the next recruiting class just in the state of Texas is great (Jonathan Grey and Mario Edwards will both be top 10 nationally).

Has recruiting been the problem? Their current junior class was weak by Texas standards, but the other 3 (senior, soph, freshman) were #5, 5, 3. They might be BCS contenders in 2012, but it's not as if they've had to climb out of some big recruiting hole, have they?

Recruiting was a (relative) problem from 2006-2008. The staff was complacent after the win against USC. The last two classes were good and the next two (2011-12) look to be good as well.

Plz don't be Fangio to Texas.

It's looking like you'll get your wish. Signs are beginning to point to Diaz being the guy.

Of course, with the way this process has gone, I fully expect to see that Jerry Gray has been named DC.

Can't we lock Mack in the basement and throw $6 mil at Harbaugh?

I want to lock "Let's turn a top spread team into a pro-style team" Mack in the basement until he turns back into "Change to zone read for VY and spread for Colt" Mack.

Yeah, if only Texas could recruit enough talent to compete.

Yeah, because that's what I said.

First report from a news station in Detroit saying that Rodriguez is gone.

If Michigan picks Hoke, what kind of coaching staff can he reasonably be expected to put together at this point?

Indiana made a big financial commitment to their program by increasing the pool for assistant coaches by nearly 100%. They're getting position coaches to come in for lateral moves but big raises.

Good for Michigan. I applaud the move because the move shows they are not putting up with mediocrity like my alma mater (Illinois). Shannon at Miami (FL) gone after three years even though he had an above .500 record. I have argued with people that Illinois could be a very good football program if they showed that had a commitment to winning. Yeah, Illinois could be good next year if everyone (including coaches) stays but what about the following years? Again, kudos to Michigan for not accepting mediocrity.

He'll probably bring along one of Borges (OC) and Long (DC) while the other becomes the new SDSU coach. Though UCLA is in talks with Borges to replace Norm Chow.

People on this board disagreed, but I thought little of Rodriguez after he all but accepted (even encouraged?) Mallett's transfer. Sure, Mallett didn't fit his system. But great coaches work with the resources available, and Mallett is/was an outstanding resource. Meanwhile, defensively you play some 3-3-5 with so few defensive back's that walk-ons are playing. If you cannot adjust to your personnel, you're not a great coach.

And I'm an IU fan so I don't care much either way.

How has Illinois not shown a commitment to winning? They've upgraded both practice and gameday facilities, they pay their coaches well, and it appears things are starting to turn around. I'm not a huge Zook fan, but the program is inching in the right direction.

To me it will all depend on who the next hire is. If they have someone specifically in mind (obviously Harbaugh comes to mind) then I am ok with the firing. If they were firing him just because they were fed up with the results, then I am not sure if they gave Rodriguez enough time. I don't want to be shitty, but I accepted that there would be 2 years to transition into a spread offense. The results of the last 2 years didn't bother me. The fact that our defense was 108th in the nation this year did bother me, and I didn't really consider going 7-6 a success in year 3. But you've knowing punting away 2 years of a program that never punts away years to make the switch to the spread, and the third year doesn't go their way and he's fired? Now what? You hire a coach to run a traditional offense and punt another year going back (I am assuming its easier to go back than to switch to one)?

Blah, at least the offseason will be interesting.

To me the move only makes sense if they already have Harbaugh in their back pocket. Otherwise it seems that they are taking a tremendous risk which could blow up.

I agree. The coaching search for Rodriguez was a disaster with people publically turning UM down left and right. I can only imagine how fun this one will be if they don't have someone in their back pocket.

The last coaching search is at the front of every UM fan's mind right now. No way they would fire Rich Rod without having someone else in place. Also, national signing day is less than a month away. Our recruiting class will be [expletive] if we don't have a coach in place ASAP.
