Bill Stewart is stepping down at WV. I will not make a prediction on who takes over.

http://wvgazette.com/Sports/201012131877

Bill Stewart is on record as saying he has no intention of resigning or retiring, either before or after West Virginia's Dec. 28 date with North Carolina State in the Champs Sports Bowl.

The problem is that, likewise, no one who has a say in retaining WVU's football coach will publicly support Stewart, chief among them first-year athletic director Oliver Luck.

where are you getting this stuff from?

It sounds like it's true.

Based on multiple source accounts, a team meeting has occurred this evening in which Coach Bill Stewart has informed his team he will be stepping down as head coach after the bowl game. Dana Holgorsen, current offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, will replace him officially at that point.

well, some reporters are definitely [expletive] the bed.

since he said recently that he had no plans to retire, if he does step down soon, it would certainly seem that he has been told to resign or be fired.

how much would an Auburn penalty really impact his job credentials. Unless it's an SMU-death penalty, he'll have the same or better options next year.

I'm not sure. If damning evidence against AU were to surface in the next couple of months, it would impact the 2011 recruiting class. I'm pretty sure Malzahn will need two players from this 2011 class to contribute on the offensive line to have a decent offense next year. There is also an incoming QB that has committed that could potentially battle Barrett Trotter for the QB position when Cam leaves. Everyone has been saying that Malzahn's stock is as high as it will ever be right now. For it to remain high, he will need for AU to field a respectable offense next year. He can't have the 2011 recruiting class falling apart, players transferring, etc. Admittedly, there is probably some wishful thinking involved in my finding a relationship between Gus extending his contract with AU and AU's prognosis with respect to sanctions.

A Juco recruit, Tank Carradine, was supposed to take an official visit to Ohio State this past weekend. He took the flight to columbus, but never went to OSU. Instead, he drove home to Cincinnati to visit his mother. He basically tricked OSU into giving him a free flight home. Couldn't happen to a better school. I wonder if OSU will bill him for that flight.

Former ND OC Mike Haywood is reported leader for Pitt gig. Wow. I like Haywood, but 1 terrible season and 1 good season at Miami (OH) and you're ready for Pitt? Was Wanny really that bad?

I don't think a lot of people realize how bad MAC football has been the last couple years.

I think going from 1-11, to winning the league without completely changing the roster shows the difference between the top and the bottom of that conference wasn't very much. The MAC used to be a solid league for football.

I don't think anyone realizes that. People keep getting jobs because they've "turned around" a program in the MAC. Well if it keeps happening every year, it must not be very hard to do. No one is good.

And his "turnaround" was a bunch of close wins against equally [expletive] MAC teams coupled with blowout losses against any good teams they played (35-3 to Cincy???)

To be fair, he didn't have a lot of talent to work with.

ESPN is reporting that Ralph Friedgen may be asked to accept a buyout of the remainder of his contract at Maryland. Mike Leach might be the front-runner to replace him.

Somebody really needs to hire Leach. He's too good a coach to still be unemployed.

He's too good a coach to waste away at Maryland, but he made his bed

You can win at Maryland, though. And if he wins somebody will give him a better job. His problem at Tech was that he was stuck behind juggernauts in Texas and Oklahoma and a really good Missouri team. Nobody in the ACC is established as really good, save maybe for Virginia Tech.

He could win an ACC title or two at Maryland.

Yeah he's in a conference with nothing but mediocrity for the most part. His division is FSU, NC State, BC, Clemson and Wake. They had a decent season this year and he can get talent there. It's a much better option than the Minnesota job that he wanted.

Tennessee Defensive Coordinator Justin Wilcox has reportedly been offered the same position at Texas. According to some backchannel rumors, Wilcox does not like Tennessee DL coach Chuck Smith and wants him fired and has told Head Coach Derek Dooley that he will not return if Smith does.

So in other words, Wilcox hasn't been offered a job anywhere and Wilcox and Smith are best friends and he wants him promoted, and has told Head Coach Derek Dooley that if he doesn't promote his bff Smith he will not return.

Thanks for the "tip"

Well that sucks, if true. I'd really rather not see significant staff turnover like losing the DC again this season. That said, I think Chuck Smith is a good asset as well.

Yeah, I'd like some continuity as well. And maybe shnsajax could shed some light on it, but one of the mods at Orangebloods.com has been quoted as saying that he' heard that Wilcox wants out of Tennessee, and has been sort of covertly scouring the job market. Don't know why he'd know that when others don't, and I don't have an orangebloods account to confirm, but there is definitely smoke out there.

He does not fit the description that Texas has allegedly posted (12 years NCAA experience and 7 years in the NFL) but he's still involved in rumors there.

Both of the Texas jobs have been a lot of smoke and mirrors. So far its been rumored that Randy Shannon, and Teyrl Austin have been offered and accepted both of the positions. Obviously neither one of those is, so its hard to figure out whats going on. There was talk of a mole leaking everything prior to Greg Davis getting fired so it might have been to figure out who was the leak.

The job posting were strange but they had a Board of Regents meeting on Friday, the belief is now that the job posting were made to get the approval ahead of time for a pay increase for both assistants without having to wait down the road once someone has been made an offer. Right now I wish I had a better idea for how either assistant is going to be. I had expected both jobs to be filled last week. Now I am realizing it may not happen until the new year.

Right now my only guess is that Major Applewhite is named Co-OC with someone who is sort of a splash hire who will be gone in two years for a HC job.
