Looks like its beyond just preliminary talking and instead has heated up.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are actively involved in discussions on a possible three-player deal with the Milwaukee Brewers that would bring slugging first baseman Prince Fielder to Los Angeles in exchange for Dodgers first baseman James Loney and embattled closer Jonathan Broxton, according to multiple sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

For the record, I would do that trade in a heartbeat if I was LA. And as a Cubs fan I hope that trade goes through (assuming we cant get fielder).

Unless I was the owner and my ex-wife was about to take every last dime, I would do it too. I would probably do it regardless of my financial future.

Does anyone really think the Cubs had any kind of shot of landing Fielder? The Gonzalez move pretty much sealed it for me that Prince was going to be traded and signed to an extension by whoever he was traded to, and there was almost no chance that the Brewers would have traded him to the Cubs unless the Cubs did something monumentally stupid and vastly overpaid for him to the point the Brewers couldn't say no.

Not unless its a three team deal, which is now what ESPN is report is in the works. Would the dodgers flip Fielder to the Cubs without pissing off the Brewers?

Not unless Ned Colletti is stil on the Cubs payroll. The Dodgers are a power hitter away from being potentially as good as anyone in the NL. If they acquire Fielder, they're doing it to keep him for 2011 and beyond. I think McCourt must have finally heard enough backlash from Dodger fans, because they've been as active as anyone so far this offseason.

The Brewers just traded for Marcum though, and are apparently going after Greinke too. Seems possible they might go for it this year and then take the draft picks.

Sure, they WANT to "go for it"...but I'm thinking it's pretty likely they'll be out of it by the time the deadline will be rolling around, even with how bad this division is.

I agree.

As I wrote in the "A-Gon gone" thread:

You know that beer commercial that's out right now where the hostage takers make up a list of ridiculous demands. I imagine the Milwaukee Brewer front office is doing the same thing right now with the Cubs in their negotiations to "free" Prince Fielder.

Maybe we would be the third team, but getting Loney for prospects.

So long as Fielder is still represented by Scott Boras, I don't see much of a chance that he signs an extension without testing free agency.

Depends on who he is traded to.

Not really.

30 potential bidders > 1 bidder. It's a Boras founding principle.

He got Tom Hicks to bid against himself for A-Rod.

I am convinced that Fielder will be DHing for the Yankees before the deadline.

Tough call; I think it all depends on how Jesus Montero is doing. A lot of people have him pegged as the top hitting prospect in the minors, especially considering how well he handled AAA this past season. If he's OPSing around .800 and looking promising, I think the Yankees will stand pat as far as Fielder is concerned.

However, I definitely could see Fielder as an option for an AL team looking for a DH.

... when he became a free agent after not extending with Seattle.
