Am I crazy to want Pena? second to A-Gon?

Wont have to give up prospects

Good glove, plus for a young SS like Castro, and possibly 3b Vitters soon..

Good clubhouse guy for young team

What would everyone feel a good deal for him and season would be??

I'm guessing he gets more than 1 year, at least a player option that vests without a hell of a lot of PA.

He made $10m this year, and can probably get $9+ this year despite the off season. Maybe a 1 year deal for $9m, with a team option for $14m next season and a $1-2m buyout. But he can probably get something like he got last time, 3 years.

I would be cool with that.

This is a little off-topic, but does anyone know if there's ever been two full-time position players with at least 500PA to hit under .200 in the same season? Pena and Reynolds did it this year

I'm sure it's happened with how little offense was valued at the SS position forever.

If Pena can be had at a 1 year deal he goes to the top of my list. Obviously trading for AGon and extending would be awesome depending on who is given up but I would rather roll the dice on Pena on a 1 yr deal up to 10 mil or so in total salary (including incentives). Then the Cubs could focus on trying to improve @ 2B or just standing until next season.

Can we get 2007 Pena?

I'd settle for 2009.

I think 2009 Pena is what could be reasonably expected. He's not going to hit .196 again. And I don't know if he had an injury, but he had no power at the end of the season.

old player skills plus late bloomer = guy who's not going to be good into his mid 30s. stay away.

Well, if it's a 1-year deal....the Cubs won't have to worry about his mid 30s, as he'll only be 33 next year. Not quite mid-30s.

I'd settle for 2009.

I'd settle for 2010 Adam Dunn.

That's not how it works, man. Dunn is out of the Cubs budget, so Pena, Nick Johnson, et al., are now targets for Hendry.

I would bet they spend more money this winter than it would take to get Dunn. And they'll spend it on worthless crap they don't need.

[expletive]. They could easily afford Dunn within the reduced budget if they wanted to.

Yeah well you're living in a fantasy world where we don't need Jeff Nelson or Jesse Orosco to shore up the pen along with Doug Drabek eating innings in the rotation.

According to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times, the Cubs have checked in on free agent first baseman Carlos Pena.

The Cubs are also targeting free agent first baseman Adam Dunn, but Pena isn't a bad backup plan. He slugged 28 home runs and tallied 84 RBI for the AL East champion Rays this year. "I know that there are teams out there that will be interested in my services," Pena told MLB Network Radio on Tuesday. "I can’t stress how important it is for me to be in a place where I’m wanted and a place where they're going to be counting on me."

The Dunn blurb is nice, but my guess is it's just recycled info from a Florida writer that doesn't keep up with the Cubs. I wonder what the odds are of Pena taking a one year deal are? I thought I read earlier that he preferred one actually, so he could rebuild his value some for his probable final multi-year contract.
