Sandberg will be our next manager. I'd be shocked beyond belief if wasn't.

Yep - they need to do something in the offseason to get the general fanbase excited again and bringing back Quade or hiring Bob Melvin isn't going to get it done. I think Ricketts has wanted Sandberg since he bought the team and now he has Hendry doing the dog and pony show to make it seem like it was not predetermined. Maybe if Girardi were to throw himself at the Cubs they would consider that instead but even then I think they would lean Sandberg because he probably come cheaper.

I really don't see Sandberg being the likely option. The team is too much of a question mark, and his lack of experience could easily turn into an ugly talking point if things go south quickly. I think the Cubs are praying that Girardi makes himself available to them (though I'm not).

It seems Ricketts paid his billion bucks, and now wants to avail himself of all his poorly-considered Cub fantasies.

My only hope is that after his cub fandom is satisfied and results in nothing more than mediocrity, he'll wake up and start running this thing for real.

Because right now it's like plucking a random fan from the stands and giving him the reins.

Girardi would cost too much to convince to come here. Sandberg is a slam dunk. It's great for marketing and the majority of clueless Cubs fans want this.

I'm not a huge fan of Girardi to begin with, but I don't see him leaving the Yankees to take over the Cubs in THIS situation. He'd be leaving a team that has the financial capability to do basically whatever it wants to do, as far as rosters go, to take over a team that's hamstrung for the most part currently and is waiting on some young talent to mature before being able to even think about having anything close to the talent the Yankees have right now.

My guess is the Cubs give Quade the job on a 1 year deal, keep him on a short leash, and then replace him w/Rhino if/when the team starts to suck.

rhino?

Me brain is still trying to recover from the SC/Auburn game and all the after party shots that followed...sorry Ryno

Ozzie Guillen To Manage White Sox In 2011

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [september 27 at 5:12pm CST]

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who is under contract for 2011, told Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times that he'll be "with the White Sox next season" and that he wants to return (Twitter links). There has been uncertainty around Guillen, partly because of the many upcoming managerial vacancies and partly because he appeared to want more job security.

The Marlins, in particular, seemed like a potential fit, but Guillen isn't going anywhere soon. GM Kenny Williams says he won't allow rival teams to interview Guillen for potential jobs. The 46-year-old is now in his seventh season as White Sox manager and has a regular season record of 595-533. Guillen, who led the team to a World Weries title in 2005, steered Chicago back into contention this year after a poor start to the season.

Thankfully this will end the ridiculous speculation of Ozzie to the Cubs.

Sandberg's not a slam dunk. He's only a slam dunk if the team is a slam dunk to be good.

A rhinoceros wouldn't be a bad idea. You need a thick skin to deal with the media in this job.

Not in Chicago. The media in Chicago is a bunch of pussys really.

Assuming the Cubs play .500 ball until the end it's going to be really tough to not give Quade the job. He'll be cheap, and unless he lands the Blue Jays job I could still see Ryno wind up as his bench coach with a handshake agreement that he's the heir apparent.

I don't think it'll be tough at all. I mean how many fans are clamoring for Quade to get the job? What's the point of Ryno being a heir apparent bench coach? Just cut to the chase and hire him if you wanna hire him.

Because he has no experience at all coaching at the major league level. It would be perfectly reasonable to make him a bench coach with an unofficial understanding that he's likely next in line as manager.

I will say, I don't really invision much difference between how Quade has managed and how I imagine Sandberg would probably manage. If the choice comes down to those two, I don't think it really matters.

Is he going to really learn anything from Quade being a bench coach under him? Make Sandberg the manager if that's who you want and hire a strong bench coach for him.

Who cares about learning, and what if they don't want to do that right now? What if they want to hold back that silver bullet? You hire him as bench coach today and you get a boost in fan sentiment, you hire him as manager in 2 years and you probably get another boost. Unless he just refuses such a job I don't see the point in not wanting him there.

Cubs starter Ryan Dempster endorsed Mike Quade as manager, saying to CSNChicago's Patrick Mooney and others, "He’s done a great job and I hope that he’s here longer than just this year (and) managing for us next year because he deserves it." Mooney also spoke to hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, who's intent on honoring his three-year contract regardless of the team's manager changes.

Anybody surprised a hitting coach from a bad hitting team would be willing to honor the contract that makes him the highest paid hitting coach in the game?

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, the Cubs "remain intent on taking a run" at Joe Girardi.

The Cubs are motivated to learn about Girardi, according to Olney, but they would also like to placate their rabid fan base. Worth a shot, even though it would be awful tough to pry him away from New York, assuming the Yankees will want to retain him.

I'm perfectly content to pay Quade a small salary as a manager. Hopefully, some of that money can get reinvested in overslots and international signings.
