Rogers in today's Tribune:

Unless there's a Joe Girardi Hail Mary at the buzzer, the next Cubs manager isn't going to be a big name like Lou Piniella or Dusty Baker. A source close to the search says the focus is on finding someone who can be a teacher as well as push buttons. Ryne Sandberg's hopes could depend on how well-prepared players such as Darwin Barney, Welington Castillo and Sam Fuld appear down the stretch. … Alan Trammell, Piniella's bench coach, is definitely a teacher. Ditto third base coach Mike Quade and outside possibilities Ted Simmons, Fredi Gonzalez, Eric Wedge, DeMarlo Hale and Gary Varsho.

It looks like the Cubs want a young manager to relate with the young players. So much for "not rebuilding."

I've heard whispers of Bobby V and even Joe Torre. I'd like a young manager (that is not Sandberg) that is a teacher and can be around for a while, if things go well.

What is everyone's favorite moment of the Lou Piniella tenure with the Cubs?

Mine is the rant he had about Stevie Ire throwing 50 foot curveballs during a post-game press conference early in '07.

I'm pretty sure that was actually Ohman who was throwing the 50 foot curveballs.

So watching on WGN, Hendry was pretty harsh on Trammell. anyone else catch that?

What did he say, exactly?

he Said that he had a conversation with Trammell before the game and told him that since he wasn't an option for next year he didn't want to get his hopes up by being the interim manager.

Ah you're probably right. I combined two ridiculous Lou moments into one super memory.

What are the negatives about Sandberg?
I hate Ryne Sandberg.

The minor leagues are supposed to be about the young kids. Helping the kids become major leaguers. He's only out for himself, just like he always was. All he ever cared about was winning - winning - winning.

A real LOSER off-the-field too. No wonder he's headed for a second DIVORCE. LOUSY family man.

The Hall of Fame does not make you a good person. He let it go to his head. I hope to GOD he never ever manages the CUBS. I'll become a Whie Sox fan.

IT'S NICE TO BE IMPORTANT BUT IT'S MORE IMPORTANT TO BE NICE!!!!

I realize it's Phil Rogers, but after watching the Cubs the past few weeks (and especially today), they need someone to teach them fundamentals that they should have learned in Little League. I do wonder if Hendry has had second thoughts about "not rebuilding" and going with a young manager/teacher would fit with a very young/inexperienced team. Of course, behind all of this could be another motive - money. Signing most of the guys on that list would be a lot cheaper than someone like Valentine.

Lou's all choked up in the postgame.

it was gross to watch. the only reason i want a young manager is so i dont have to watch some old guy with his weird veins and spots on his forehead.

I am surprising quite sad about this whole situation. I honestly didn't think I would have reacted this way, but there you have it. Does anyone know what is wrong with Lou's mother? I am guessing it is probably just old age at this point?

I didn't always agree with his decisions but I'm sad that this game/season is how he ends a very good career. In the end it's the right decision; he knew this was his last year so, with the team being so bad, he'd never forgive himself if his mom passed away and he wasn't there (I speak from experience).

It's mostly that we're scared if he becomes the manager, Cubbette will run onto the field and castrate him with a butcher knife during a pitching change. Really, we just have Ryno's best interests at heart.
