Alabama can't spell Mississippi

Neither can Mississippi

Actually we can....although the only reason why is they teach us a little ditty when you are in kindergarten here: "M-I-crooked letter-crooked letter-I-crooked letter-crooked letter-I-humpback-humpback-I."

They taught that in my school in central IL too.

Eastern Iowa too. I always thought it was easier to remember that there were 4 S's and 2 P's than some stupid jingle.

I never heard it with the crooked letter stuff, but I did hear it as a semi-jingle-ish m-i-s-s--i-s-s--i-p-p-i

Yeah that's just weird.

In the middle of a week-long vacation through the southeast and into Myrtle Beach. Just wanted to add that Knoxville was pretty cool. Found it amusing that the updates on their local sports talk radio station in Knoxville led with stats from Tuesday's scrimmage followed by more UT news, followed by other SEC football news and lastly Braves scores. Not a mention of the Titans. For an hour that we listened it was all about the QB controversy but they brought on an Oregon writer to talk about that game and whether Auburn should get the 2004 BCS title.

SEC fans are nuts but kind of in a cooler way than I thought previously. At least the one's I've met, I'm sure if you get into less populated areas it's the typical stereotype. Of course they all assume that middle of the road SEC schools would be awesome in the Big Ten and top Big Ten schools would be middle of the pack in the SEC. They seem to respect Iowa and Ferentz but probably only because they've fared well against SEC schools in bowls. They seem to know a lot more about opposing SEC teams than Big Ten fans do about other teams in the conference.

because if the hypothetical hunchbacked letter is facing the way in which you are coming "S-S-I..." then it is correct, the letter has a "humpback".

Ditto. In 1st grade, kids would also make fun of you for saying "pee pee" in spelling the name. It was like being asked to spell "attic".

I grew up in the NW suburbs of Chicago and I learned that in school too.

And to get this thread back on topic, I am ready to watch some college football. My Aggies start the season with 3 crappy non-conference games, so I will have to wait until a week 4 Thursday night match-up in Stillwater to see my boys play on TV. Then the next week it's Arkansas at Jerryworld.
