I agree with erik. While the Cubs haven't set a ton of futility records, and some of the "records" they came very close to setting are rather obscure, I would have a hard time believing that many teams have done some of these things in such a reasonably short amount of time. I can't be sure, but the Cubs certainly seem to be trying to re-define the word "suck".

Honestly, it seems like every time there's a game where one team gets killed and the other wins by putting up football numbers you hear about it was the first time since so-and-so that a team did or didn't do this or that.

That may be the case, but the Cubs allosed 35 runs in 2 games over a 4 day period. I'm not going to say that the Cubs had the suckiest 4-day period in the history of baseball, but I can't remember a Cubs team sucking that bad over a 4-day period since I've been watching, and I've seen some pretty sucky teams.

Wow....only the Cubs. ;)

Of course, I'm going entirely off memory alone, and I am not blessed with the time required to go through every game log over the last 50 years to look at box-scores in order to determine whether or not the obscure records the Cubs allowed during that 4 game stretch have been duplicated and/or exceeded.

It just seems like every time the Cubs played a game last weekend, some Sportscenter anchor had to list 2 or 3 obscure futility record that the Cubs tied, broke, came close to, or in general, did/allowed something to happen that hasn't happened in a long time.

I would also like to point out, as databases full of statistics from major league baseball grow larger and more complex by the day, sports enthusiasts and major sports networks and outlets will certainly be more capable of uncovering random records, thus making it more common to see obscure records being broken and/or approached more often.

The point is they're dumbass stats like walk-off cycles that mean nothing with regards to futility.

The reason the Brewers had so many ABs with RISP is because they hit nothing but singles. Would the Cubs have been more successful if every inning went single-HR-out-out-out? That'd be an awesome game, no ABs with RISP, that's a record!! The Cubs ARE GOOD!

They also point out things like the first time a guy named Petey ever had 2 doubles in the 3rd game of the 4th week of April.

Follow the logic. Useless trivia has no relationship with how good/bad a team is. That's why pointing out random facts and saying "only the Cubs" as if it's some sort of proof of their futility is a dumb exercise.

now THEY sucked

Actually, if you look 2 days prior to the start of the 99 losing streak, they allowed 17 runs. So in a 6 game stretch, they were 1-5, and had gave up 81 runs.

They did score 34 runs in that stretch, so it wasn't a total loss.

Read the post. All of it as a whole points to just how bad the Cubs have been lately. If you only cherry pick it one piece here or one piece there and take it out of context as people on NSBB love to do, then yes, it's going to have a different meaning. Eat the whole pizza, not just a slice.

And the point I was trying to make was that the Cubs just haven't been bad, they've been so bad lately that teams have been doing things on the field against them that haven't been done in a very, very long time. Never once anywhere did I say the Cubs were the worst team ever. If others want to take issue with it, that's fine. And the Cubs really don't need a whole lot of "proof" as to their futility, do they?

So as I've said earlier in this thread after Fred posted: Ok maybe not "only the Cubs", but they've been exceptionally horrible lately.

And excellent job of avoiding the point, btw.

Way to go right for the personal insult (paraphrased due to erik's edit)

This has turned into a remarkable game of turnaround. Erik can't even prove his own point, yet continually demands that everyone must prove him "wrong." He's enormous, and now he's slamming other people for being fat. WHERE WILL IT END?!?!

Sometimes when logic and reason doesn't work you have to argue with people on their level. I'm sorry that's the only thing you seem to understand.

I am now officially done with this thread as people refuse to read and just like to cherry pick one or two things instead of looking at the entire picture, and therefore have decided to devolve into the highly useful practice of engaging in personal insults (myself included).

He's enormous, and now he's slamming other people for being fat.

Yeah. Like this.

If you disagree with me, fine, but apparently some people can't disagree without being disagreeable.

I have noticed that every time we get to this point in the baseball season our posts (collectively) start sounding more and more surly, is this because our beloved Cubs bit the big one this time of year or is it because we are tired of writing about how the Cubs bit the big one last night so only contemptuous crap flows from our fingertips?

So I'll say it now with all sincerity, if I have offended anybody in the past month, in any of my post, then I am blaming it on the Cubs because it couldn't be my fault and you should get over it. I say this sincerely and with an open heart

--Rockies batted around twice in one inning, getting 11 consecutive hits in the process, tying the Major League record and plating 12 runs

Against the Pirates on 4/22/10, the Brewers batted around in the 7th and again in the 9th, en route to a 20-0 victory. It's no "11 consecutive hits", but batting around twice in one game is batting around twice in one game.

--Lost 6 straight games

Pirates lost seven straight from 4/20-4/26

-- Allowed 26 hits in a game for the first time in 53 years.

Pirates allowed 25 hits in the aforementioned game against Milwaukee. Only one less.

-- The Brewers batted around in consecutive innings last night

The Brewers batted around in the 3rd and 8th innings against Pittsburgh on 4/26/10. This in addition to the previously mentioned game where they batted around twice against Pittsburgh only four days earlier.

-- Brewers also had 29 AB's with RISP last night-- only the 2nd time that has happened in a game since 1974

Brewers had 21 ABs with RISP in the 20-0 game against the Pirates. However, it would have been more if not for a couple of homeruns with two guys on base, as opposed to only one homer against the Cubs. Furthermore, while Milwaukee had 29 ABs wtih RISP against the Cubs, they tallied 12 hits for a .414 avg in those situations. Against Pittsburgh, they went 10-for-21, for a .476 avg with RISP.

-- Allowed 14 hits to the 2-3-4 hitters last night, the first time that has happened since at least 1961 anywhere in the majors

The 2-3-4 hitters are at least typically some of the better hitters in the lineup. The Pirates allowed the Brewers 6-9 hitters to go 11-for-22, including two hits by the pitcher. Later in the game, they gave up a hit to a relief pitcher that was inserted higher in the order on a double switch.

-- Had one of our best SP this year go on the DL with a freak and quite scary heart episode (I'll grant you that this had nothing to do with the Cubs play, but still)

This is irrelevant as it's not like an injury to any player was going to hurt the Cubs chances at this point in the season. The same can be said for the Pirates during their streak, even though it was April (sorry, Jake).

--Been outscored 63-17 in the previous week

Pirates were outscored 72-12 from 4/20 - 4/26.

-- Given up the cycle to a player, and allowing him to complete it on a walk-off HR, no less

The Pirates never even led late in any game during their streak to even allow for a walkoff. And while they didn't allow a cycle, Edmonds came close, hitting a single, two doubles, and a homer in one game. They also managed to give up four hits in a game to Greg Zaun of all people.

This is only looking at 2010. I'm sure if anyone went back through the years, they could find SEVERAL examples of bad weeks that rival or surpass what the Cubs have done.

Posted

Ok. You see that? Grassbass gave me what I asked for, he has shown that the Pirates had a worse week in April than the Cubs have currently. He actually researched and posted stats to debunk my points one by one. And, as I said if someone could do that, I would admit I was wrong. See how simple that was?

So here it is: I was wrong. I'm a man of my word.

Grassbass, you're a credit to NSBB, and I don't mean that sarcastically.
