Fascinating . . .

What I hear is the Mets are trying to locate a pitcher (probably a reliever) who is overpriced and not having a particularly strong season, but who their scouts like and pluck him for little to no prospect in return.

Buying low on a reliever isn't a bad idea. But if he's overpriced and you're trying to make the playoffs, I'm not sure how good an idea it is.

I just find the overpriced part interesting. I guess big market teams can do that stuff, but that seems like a weird attribute to target.

I like buying low on a reliever who your scouts believe has the stuff to improve, though.

I don't think it's that odd just because relievers are so unpredictable from season to season as group. If a guy is overpaid, it's likely because he has been a successful reliever for at least one season and a GM like Hendry rewarded his past success, expecting similar production going forward. If scouts like the pitcher and it doesn't cost the shopping team any real value in players or dollars, and there is a chance the guy returns to the form that earned him the salary to begin with, then it seems a reasonable gamble for a big market team.

Buying overpriced players is how the Cubs got Ramirez. Overpaid for one team can easily fit in the budget of another.

I guess when I hear overpriced I'm thinking he's underperformed his contract for more than one year – meaning he's likely struggled for 2-3+ years. I probably wouldn't want to target a guy like that.

Good point. I can see it more for position players than relievers, I guess. I think I just found it odd because of what I think of when I hear overpaid.

Sure, it's not ideal. But if it's a reliever who is currently performing, you may have to give up a whole bunch, and then you still run the risk of an inconsistent reliever not performing for you while you've given up a lot of talent for him. It takes assets to acquire a player. Whatever combination of money and talent you are willing to pay varies from team to team. If you value your talent (prospects) more then hold onto them and pay more in money.

If a reliever is overpriced he's likely in his 30s, not still in arbitration years coming off of a leg injury his braindead organization made him play through.

Tigers trade LH pitching prospect Giovanni Soto to CLE for Jhonny Peralta.

I was SO tempted to start a "Soto traded to CLE for Jhonny Peralta" thread.

I actually thought about it. Part of me is disappointed that we wont have Giovanni Soto pitching and Geovany Soto catching.

Dodgers Acquire Scott Podsednik

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 28 at 8:03pm CST]

The Dodgers will acquire Scott Podsednik from the Royals for two minor leaguers, according to ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. This afternoon, the Dodgers were pursuing Podsednik and other outfielders, including Ryan Raburn. GM Ned Colletti wanted outfield depth, since Manny Ramirez and Reed Johnson are on the DL.

May as well have just kept the overpaid black version.

My conversation with my parents, die hard Royals fans went like this:

Me: Royals traded Pods.

Parents: Why? He was terrific!

Me: He was going to be a free agent and he's not even that good.

Parents: He was hitting over .300!

Me: But the Royals are out of it anyways.

Parents: But couldn't we have tried to win a few games this year?!?

My Dad then said he was done with the team for this year. It's so hard to talk baseball with my parents.

Do they like Alex Gordon?

Boers and Bernstein yesterday was amazing comedy. White Sox fans calling in and saying that Juan Pierre is better than Adam Dunn, and the subsequent screaming matches between them and Bernstein made for some winning radio.

Nope, they absolutely hate him. So do a lot of the "uninformed" fans around KC. I keep trying to explain to them about how potential and give him time, but that doesn't work too well.

I cheer for the Royals because they are in my hometown (Cubs are where my heart is), but I think so many years of utter disgusting baseball has finally driven some fans insane. They've been promised "We're rebuilding" way too many times by this point.

My buddy argues he isn't Evan Longoria. I explain to him he's right, but you don't have Evan Longoria or anyone good playing third, so you might as well play Alex anyways. They hate him.

Not worth a new thread, but I found this interesting.

The Red Sox are leaving no rock unturned in their search for relief help. They've explored Rafael Perez, Will Ohman, Mike Gonzalez, Matt Capps, Michael Wuertz, Craig Breslow, Sean Marshall, Kerry Wood, David Aardsma, and Kyle Farnsworth, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

I wonder how far those negotiations went.

If the Cubs bullpen still included Ohman, Wuertz, Wood, and Farnsworth in addition to Marshall and Marmol, maybe we wouldn't be 10 games out. Although we would then have a Yankees like payroll.

Rangers get Cantu from the Marlins for RHP Evan Reed and RHP Omar Poveda (on DL; recovering from TJ surgery).
