When asked about the vacancy Tuesday, Torre said: "Don't even talk about me. I'm not searching around, believe me." He also reiterated that in the next month or so he'll declare if he wants to manage in 2011. "I'm not sure how much I want to work after this year," he said. "That's what I have to figure out. But I'm not of a mind to think I'm going to be doing this anywhere but here."

Heard something bounced around this morning about Joe Torre possibly testing the waters in the front office ranks. If he so chooses that route and Hendry is fired, I'm not quite sure he would be a good fit for Cubs GM, but it's something to think about.

I'm interested to see if Greg Maddux's name pops up further after the season is over. If Sandberg, Girardi, or Brenly becomes Cubs manager I could definitely see Maddux signing on as a coach, probably pitching coach.

"What I said was I did interview for this job when Lou got it," Brenly told the Tribune. "I had interest then and I would have interest again to sit down with Jim Hendry and whoever else is in the process."

Would he approach general manager Jim Hendry about the opening?

"I see Jim every day," he said. "Like I said yesterday, if and when the time comes, I'd be happy to sit down and talk with Jim."

Hendry said he hadn't spoken to Brenly about the position, and plans on taking his time in the process. He had no comment on whether or not Brenly was a candidate. Hendry said he doesn't plan on doing daily updates on every potential candidate that throws his hat into the ring.

Didn't Torre just turn 70? Does a 70-year-old want a multi-year project like the Cubs? Do the Cubs want to hand over their multi-year project to a 70-year-old?

Hendry was on Mike and Mike this morning and said the focus of the search would be on managerial candidates who can "be here for the long term." Hendry emphasized how we have quality young players here now (mentioning Castro, Colvin and Cashner in particular) and that he expects a steady flow of them in the upcoming years.

That would seem to rule out somebody like Torre and make a Sandberg, Fredi Gonzalez, Brenly, etc., more likely.

Interesting, though probably not meaningful at all. Thought I'd pass it along anyway.

Former Florida Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez will be one of the candidates interviewed for the Chicago Cubs managerial job, according to a major league source.

Gonzalez, who was fired by the Marlins on June 24, has a long personal and professional relationship with Cubs general manager Jim Hendry stemming from the time they worked together with the Marlins.

Quick question: Why is there so much Sandberg hate out there? Is there a reason in particular?

Yes. He has shown tendencies to make stupid managerial decisions that fit into the conventional wisdom style of play that has been proven to often do more harm than good.

He's been a pretty big advocate in the past (through Yahoo! writings and his HOF speech) of "small-ball" and the very traditional viewpoints on the game. That has been accompanied by some really strange managerial decisions in the minors (in a TN game a couple years ago he had his 3 and 4 hitters attempt sac bunts after the inning opened with eight straight balls).

Don't do that to me ESPN. That's mean

I still think hes the Braves next manager

It's pretty obvious that SSR does, too

maybe it's good that he's younger than cox, we can just give him 13 years or whatever to do his thing and get ready down there, and then make the call and give him the job we know he really wants (even if he doesn't act like it).

good things come to those who wait.

That's got to be the most likely scenario, but the fact that he has a history with Hendry should be a good sign.

There's a history, but Hendry spent what, 2 years in Florida back in the early 90's? It's not like they have a long professional relationship.

In the ESPN story, Levine referred to it as a "long and personal relationship." The inference from what he wrote is that the relationship began in Florida and has continued since.

Gonzalez to the Braves is still the likely scenario, though.

I understand that there may be a personal relationship, my point was their professional interactions have been very limited.

The likelihood is that the professional interactions have been limited, but that doesn't negate that there is a history between the two. If they get along on a personal level, there's a higher chance that Gonzalez will have an interest in the Cubs' job – and I think that's what davearm's point was.

He didn't play with his baseball cards in the attic as a child.

Hendry and his staff will almost certainly remain for next year, you don't keep someone around and have him as the ley component through the entire interview process and then fire him.

My dream team would be...

Pat Gillick as team president:

Logan White-GM

Tim Wilken-SD

Tim Bogar-Manager

I'm not as big a fan of Gillick. If we're talking dream team, I'd bring in Alderson as president.

I think this relates to this conversation. I think the Ricketts are going to keep Hendry, and I like it. I don't approve of the way this team has been handled by Hendry over the last 6 years or so, but I think a lot of that had to do with pressure from the Tribune company to win now. Hendry has done pretty well for himself in other areas as GM. It seems the mistakes have nearly always been in a push for "the final piece." The Ricketts are intelligent people, and I think their plans include a rebuilding mode for the next couple of years while still being moderately competitive in a not-so-good division. I hope they do not think they have to go out and get their manager of the future this offseason though. To me, they still have a couple of years to decide on the right one, rather than the available one.

love me some pat gillick

IIRC, Gillick is openly hostile towards statistical analysis, though I don't remember where I read that.
