Marlins Designate Renyel Pinto For Assignment

By Mike Axisa [June 16 at 9:29pm CST]

The Marlins have designated lefty reliever Renyel Pinto for assignment, tweets MLB.com's Joe Frisaro. The move clears a roster spot for reliever Tim Wood, who was recalled from Triple-A.

Pinto, 27 next month, had a 2.80 ERA in 15.2 innings for Florida this year, striking out 16 to eight walks. He has actually fared better against righthanded batters in his career than lefties. Pinto is owed approximately $640K for the remainder of the season, and he will be under team control for both the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

His career numbers are pretty decent. Can't believe he won't be picked up by some team soon.

Blue Jays Outright Brian Dopirak

By Mike Axisa [June 16 at 9:06pm CST]

The Blue Jays have outrighted first baseman Brian Dopirak, reports MLB.com's Jordan Bastian (via Twitter). Dopirak has cleared waivers and has been removed from the team's 40-man roster, which now stands at 39.

The 26-year-old was playing with Toronto's Triple-A affiliate in Las Vegas, hitting .258/.281/.393 with six homers in 256 plate appearances. A former second round pick of the Cubs, Dopirak has never appeared in the big leagues, and is a career .279/.335/.480 hitter in the minors.

So in hindsight the biggest reason to hate the Pierre trade is losing Nolasco?

I think that losing Nolasco was always the biggest reason to hate the Pierre trade. Losing Mitre and Pinto was just throwing salt in the wound.

That and the fact that, at the time, all three players had substantially more value in a trade than netting a year of Juan [expletive] Pierre.

It's amazing how much damage this one player has done to the Cubs. The 2003 NLCS, the stupid trade in 2006 and breaking up the no-hitter on Sunday. Juan [expletive] Pierre.

I don't really remember Pierre doing much damage in the NLCS.

Combine all of that with the White Sox giving up John Ely and that decent reliever for him and he's screwed more people in Chicago than Patrick Kane has the past few weeks.

Pierre has got to be the biggest shyster in all of baseball. He's wrung more money and desire from more baseball teams than any other player I can remember. Tip of the cap to him for doing so, but seriously, WTF?

It was a decent improvement on his season stats that year, though.

I thought the biggest reason to hate the Juan Pierre trade was Juan Pierre.

Exactly. How many times did he ground out to 2nd base for us that year? Enough to earn a nickname is all.

It was stupid trading all that talent for him. It was even more stupid trading for him in the first place.

Hendry needed his leadoff batter, and he got him, in the worst way.

Nolasco...hasn't been all that great, and Pierre's comp pick helped us get Harden

that trade, and even more so Pierre's tenure, has been so stupidly sensationalized

I think people are stuck on the one good year that Nolasco has had as a major leaguer in 2008, so yeah, Nolasco has essentially been crap as a ML pitcher. Hidsight suggest that the Cubs got a pretty bad OF, for a pretty bad starting pitcher.
