there's no one close to Lee in the system or on the FA market this winter

You don't consider Prince Fielder to be close to Lee's production? Or did I (and Cot's) miss an extension he signed?

The Brewers control Fielder through 2011. This is not his walk year.

He is slated to hit FA at the same time as Adrian Gonzalez.

Cot's:

Prince Fielder 1b

2 year/$18M (2009-10)

* 2 years/$18M (2009-10)

o signed extension with Milwaukee 1/23/09 (avoided arbitration, $8M-$6M)

o $1M signing bonus

o 09:$6.5M, 10:$10.5M

o performance bonus: $0.5M for 500 PAs

o award bonus: $25,000 for All Star selection

* 1 year/$0.67M (2008)

o renewed by Milwaukee 3/2/08

* 1 year/$0.415M (2007)

o renewed by Milwaukee 3/07

* 1 year/$0.3295M (2006)

o re-signed by Milwaukee 2/06

* 1 year (2005)

o contract purchased by Milwaukee 6/05

* drafted 2002 (1-7)

* $2.4M signing bonus

* agent: Scott Boras

* ML service: 4.068

At the end of that two year deal he still won't have enough service time to be a free agent. That deal covered his first two arbitration years and 2011 will be his 3rd arbitration year.

Ah. I suck at figuring out service time. My bad.

Who would want Theriot?

Prolly a guy who wanted Jason Kendall, Yuniesky Bettancourt, and Scott Podsednick. We gotta try and make that trade before KC gets rid of Moore.

Is there any indication that Hendry is working on trades? I don't know, but it kind of sounds like we're doing nothing, at least for now.

All I've heard is the suggestion that he might be looking at 8th inning guys. Not sure if he still is with Cashner up, though.

Trading Lilly makes sense, but I really like him and wouldn't mind resigning him for another couple years. He's been incredible for us.

I think if Silva can keep it together for another month or so, somebody will be willing to give us something decent for him. Think about all the crappy pitchers having decent years that have been overpaid for at the deadline.

I would vote to keep Gorzelanny

If somebody would be willing to give us anything good for Lee, I'd be all for trading him. Nady can fill in at 1B the rest of the year and then we could sign Dunn in the offseason.

Pena is a FA at the end of the season. I'd have more interest if he weren't a Boras client... but he aint coming cheap.

I thought that would be a good option as well until I looked at his numbers from the last couple years, including so far this year. Ugly, especially if he's asking for a lot of money.

My list:

Trade-Lilly, Silva, Theriot, Fukudome and Lee if you can get good return,

Keep-Gorz, Demp,

A near future rotation with Z, Demp, Gorz, Wells, and Cashner or Jackson would look pretty good and also be relatively cheap for the potential quality you'd have.

The offense is an entirely different proposition though. That sucks and will take some creativity and bounce back seasons to salvage any time soon.

Very long-time lurker and first-time poster, happy to be joining the board.

This thread supports a lot of the thoughts I've had regarding this year's team and potential moves that should be made. In terms of the starting staff, I'm in favor of exploring trade options for Lilly and Silva. I don't think either of these pitchers should figure into the team's long term plans and we could get some young talent and/or free some salary space in the process. As an added bonus, we would clear the current glut in our rotation for a guy like Cashner.

Looking at our position players, I would be in favor of exploring trade options for Lee and Fukudome. Again, I don't think either of these guys should be part of the long-term plan and if we could somehow clear Fukudome's salary off next year's club I would be all for it. Give a cheap option like Colvin a shot in RF next year and sign a backup in case he falls flat (maybe re-sign Nady). Would this leave us exposed at 1B next year? Perhaps, but I think we need to get younger and I'd be willing to take a chance that we could sign a guy like Dunn or perhaps even get involved in the Gonzalez/Fielder sweepstakes.

Another gem, another win, 7 IP 1 R.

I hope we deal this guy so badly. Without some new blood, our aging nucleus will drag us downward for two to three years yet. If he's 10-1 or 11-0 in two weeks, we may be able to grab a serious prize for this find. Just have to keep losing three or four out of five to make the Cubs do the right thing.
