It's fascinating to see how much these high pitch counts have disappeared even in the last decade. Throughout the 90's, there were at least 7 different pitchers who made it to 140 every year and frequently double digit pitchers did it and the max number for the league was in the 150's and sometimes 160's. In the early 2000's it quickly dropped to 2 pitchers or less throwing over 140 pitches with the max in the 140's.

Now Jackson is the first pitcher to crack 140 since the 2005 season.

I know this is supposed to be Jackson's moment in the sun but the more remarkable thing is the Rays being no-hit 3 times in a calendar year. I wonder if it's happened before but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Where'd you hear that, out of curiosity? Not doubting it, just wondering who the last pitcher was to do it. I'm guessing...Livan Hernandez?

I'm almost positive no, but I've been wrong before.

What's even more amazing is that if you heard a team got no-hit 3 times in a year, you'd think that team would have to be completely horrible. The Rays are actually really good.

BP's pitcher abuse points has a max pitch count statistic that is sortable. Livan was the last pitcher to do it as he threw a 145 pitch game and a 150 pitch game back in 2005. Since then, the max was a tie at 138 between Hernandez in 2006 and Lincecum in 2008.

Four no-hitters this year (should be five) and the record in the modern era is seven.

And  to 149 pitches.

Ex-Cubs played a prominent role in Baltimore's come-from-behind win over Texas. Corey Patterson hit his first career grand slam (his 4th hit of the game) off Neftali Feliz with two out in the 9th to tie the game 6-6. Jake Fox then hit a home run in the 10th to win the game 7-6. On a less positive note Felix Pie left the game with a left quad strain.

Travis Wood perfect through seven for the Reds. Problem for him is he's going against Roy Halladay, who also hasn't allowed a run so it's 0-0 through 7. Halladay's only at 82 pitches so he's not leaving anytime soon.

Bengi Molina hit for the cycle in Boston this evening, and then was removed from the game after straining a calf muscle legging out the triple. Bummer.

Watching his fatass run on that triple made my night - it looked like the video was going at half speed. For somebody with any sort of speed, that could have been an inside the park home run.

This is funny, and not great for Mattingly's future managerial hopes.

I got just as confused at sideburns reading this paragraph though.

With the bases loaded and the Dodgers up by one, Jonathan Broxton came on to close it out for Los Angeles. Broxton loaded the bases, and Mattingly (who had taken over for the ejected Joe Torre), came out to discuss how to pitch to the next guy.

not sure if anyone has noticed this, but angel pagan is actually a good baseball player who's played at borderline all-star level for more than a year now. .306/.350/.487 last year (.358 wOBA), .306/.362/.466 this year (.366 wOBA), plus defender in CF. according to fangraphs he's #13 in the NL in WAR and #3 among CF. unlike casey mcgehee, who showed no ability at the major league level and very little ability at AAA, pagan actually did show some pop and defensive ability in CF. i think we gave up on this one too quickly.

I went to the Nats Reds game Wednesday and took some pictures of Strasburg warming up in the bullpen.

that doesn't really surprise me (garza's no-no). he seems like a guy who is really tough to hit when he's on (and when he's missing his spots, not so tough)

the twins beat zach greinke and the royals 19-1. mauer was 5-5 with 3 runs and 7 rbi, and some guy named danny valencia was 4-4 with 4 runs and 4 rbis. that's just a fun line.
