If you had Day Two in the "How many days will it take Dusty Baker to use Aroldis Chapman in consecutive games?" pool, you are a winner.

What has gotten into Morgan lately? He has acquired quite a rap sheet the last few days. Throwing behind Morgan after lready plunking him in response to Morgan stealing a few bags in a blowout game (Morgan was on the losing team) was a little over the top, but it did feel good to see Morgan get absolutely closelined.

Chapman threw 104 tonight. Wow. I can't think of a faster pitch I've seen.

Morgan is likely to get significant time off. He already has a suspension under appeal for his ball-throwing incident last weekend. I think ANY chance he had at getting that suspension reduced went out the window after his antics tonight.

Astros complete the sweep of the Cards.

It truely warms my heart to see the Cards wet the bed they way they have the 2nd half. It seems as though ever sinve they traded Ludwick, that teams been crap.

I don't think you understand how Brandon Phillips woke the sleeping dragon.

the phillies just swept the braves 3-1, 5-3, 1-0. i think they've given away their blueprint for playoff success - awesome starting pitcher (hamels, halladay, oswalt), followed by ryan madson in the 8th (if necessary), and brad lidge in the 9th.

they're going to be tough to beat with that rotation, at least in the NL.

It will only matter if they advance to the ALCS (since they're so far ahead of Texas, they're getting the Wild Card team regardless) and even then, only in terms of home-field advantage, but the Twins are tied with the Yankees for the best record in the majors.

Also just noticed that the Phillies are only half a game worse than both the Twins and Yankees.

jose bautista has 52 home runs, 11 more than the the #2 guy (pujols). i assume everyone saw that coming, right?

IIRC, he's set a record for biggest jump in home runs from one year to the next. I'm pretty sure the record was less than 40 and he's at 39 right now.

I also like that he has 52 homers on the year and 54 singles on the year. Apparently only two players have ever hit more home runs than singles in a season - McGwire twice (98 and 99) and Bonds once (01).

Jay Bruce just hit a walk off homer to win the division for the Reds.

Yep. Stupid Brandon Phillips and loads of Cardinals fans thinking he lead the Cardinals on a false charge to first place.

Dusty Baker threw an AAA lineup tonight against Nelson Figueroa. The traditional day off made sense in the days before playoff seeding, but he can't afford to just give away games like he did tonight with a trip to Philly looming.

Maybe you keep creaky guys like Rolen out, but all eight starters?

They were probably all hungover and it's only one game. Not a big deal.

the phillies lineup was also great last night:

J. Rollins ss

W. Valdez 2b

S. Victorino cf

M. Sweeney 1b

B. Francisco lf

J. Mayberry rf

G. Dobbs 3b

P. Hoover c

J. Blanton p

rollins probably was only in the lineup because he's coming back from injury.

naturally, sweeney and mayberry hit home runs and francisco hit 2, and they won 7-1.

These NL playoffs keep getting interesting. SD was on life support after the Cubs manhandled them all week, going into the weekend down 3 in the division and 2 in the Wild card. After SD beat the Giants last night and today, and the Phillies took 2 over the Braves, the Padres and Braves are now tied for the WC, and SD is now just 1 GB SF with 1 game to play.

Here are the scenarios I am seeing for tomorrow:

1)

SF beats SD

ATL beats PHI

RESULT: SF is NL West Champ, ATL is Wild Card

2)

SF beats SD

PHI beats ATL

RESULT: SF is NL West Champ, ATL and SD play in Atlanta on Monday for the Wild Card

3)

SD beats SF

PHI beats ATL

RESULT: SD is NL West Champ due to tiebreaker (12-5 H2H) over SF, SF wins Wild Card

4)

SD beats SF

ATL beats PHI

RESULT: Fun stuff. SD and SF will play Monday in San Diego for the NL West title, the loser of this travels to Atlanta to play ATL for Wild Card on Tuesday.

I had to look up the last scenario, because I thought previously they considered a 1 game playoff to be a regular season game, and the records counted in their regular season record, meaning the loser of the NL West 1 game playoff would fall 1/2 game behind ATL for the Wild Card, and thus Atlanta would win the WC. Did they change that recently?

Yes, they changed it, but not sure when.

Yes, they changed it, but not sure when.

It was after 1998, because the Cubs' wild card tie-breaker against the Giants counted as game 163. I'm thinking it may have been around 2000 or 2001.

Eric Patterson struck out as the tying run to end game 1 of the Red Sox/Yankees doubleheader and now he just got the walkoff hit in game 2.

I love baseball.
