I don't know if you guys remember some of those venom filled threads that came out, I recall the "we should trade him" thread.

Of course they should trade him, if they could. But they can't, so there's no point. What does this have to do with forgiving him though? His weaknesses were well known before he came to Chicago and he's done nothing but play exactly like you'd expect over the course of three seasons in Chicago. It's not like he was Pujols before then came here and turned into Neifi.

I'd be happy with:

140+games played

.270avg

.350obp

20-25 Home Runs

75+RBI

If Soriano is healthy enough to play 140 games he will hit over 30 home runs and drive in around 90-100 in the 6th spot.

Im prediction 125ish games

.281/.321/.520 .841 ops

31 HR's 86 RBI's

Somewhat of a bounce back year for Sori.

for the most part, except that he missed very few games in the seasons before he came to the cubs and now he gets hurt all the time.

He was also under 30 before he came to Chicago and over 30 in Chicago. Missed time for a guy entering his 30's shouldn't be considered a shocking change in a player's profile.

This. I feel like I have to hold my breath every time the ball isnt hit directly at him.

How could I be mad at Soriano, he's international, he's from Mexico!

I'll forgive Hendry when Soriano retires at the end of the year and lets the team off the hook for the rest of his absurd contract. In other words, never.

Posted
Blame the Trib more than Hendry. They're the ones who authorized the last hurrah spending spree to drive up the price of the team. Soriano was the shiny toy in the winter of 2006 and they weren't going to leave without him.

That's dumb. They approved the spending, they didn't force Hendry to screw up the spending. Hendry let the OF cupboard go bare, which is why he felt the need to sign Soriano (and then Fukudome) in the first place. Had he done a better job as GM before then, or even a better job as minor league coordinator before that, maybe they wouldn't have needed to go hard after an OF.

It's been widely rumored John McDonough wanted to make a splash before the '07 Cubs Convention. The Cubs of '06 sucked and McDonough wanted eliminate all the bad feelings from that year--and make one last run at that World Series ring he had promised Cub fans. What better way--in his mind--than to give one of the biggest free agents of that winter a huge contract! Shows the commitment by the Tribune company to make it happen! Here's a buttload of money, Jimbo, sign him to an 8/136 contract now ('cause I"m pretty sure I won't be around to see it through, thankfully)!

Pretty plausible, if you ask me. Wouldn't surprise be a bit if all of that were true.

The Cubs have tried to make a splash every year around the Convention. That doesn't mean they had to get Soriano. It's really convenient to blame others for Hendry's failures.

Never, ever said it wasn't Hendry's fault. Everyone knows you hate Hendry. Look past that and you'll see there are others in this whole deal who are just as complicit. Really!

Jim Hendry is the man in charge of the baseball team, he's been in charge for several years, and has been a major decision maker since the early 90's. There is nobody more to blame for the failure than Jim Hendry.

What the hell is there to "forgive" Sori for? It's not like he was trying to play badly.

Really?

I remember an AB late last year when he swung at 3 straight pitches in the dirt 2 feet outside and casually walked back to the dugout. Like he didn't give a s@!t. Injuries, frustration, whatever. I was pretty damn pissed off at that.

It will all be forgotten if he gets back to hitting. When it comes to athletes, I don't hold any grudges.

Your mind-reading skills are amazing. You should put them to better use.

That's a weird thing to remember sans grudge.

Yeah, I prefer it when the athletes representing the team I follow throw fits, cry, and mope about like children when they fail.

I already miss Milton.

he was injured. Try doing your job with one of the body parts you need most to do it hurting each and everyday and then requiring surgery to fix it.

Put up numbers like a $19 million ballplayer should?

Not his fault some stupid GM overpaid him.

Then he should return some of it!!!! 19 Million to play a game!!! I'd do it for free!!! ARGLE BARGLE ROBBLE ROBBLE

Agree with those who express sentiments that there really is no way Soriano could hope to put up the type of numbers that contract warrants.

Don't hold your breath for that .350 OBP. Considering he could barely get on base that often in his prime, I don't see how he's going to do it as he declines.

I don't think 2009 was what Jim Hendry (or anyone else) expected out of Soriano. He sucked severely and didn't earn even 25% of his salary, IMHO.

I feel like I have to hold my breath every time the ball isnt hit directly at him.

It seems like Soriano has just as much trouble with routine balls hit right at him.

Not his fault some stupid GM overpaid him.

This is a good point. I mean, who turns down $20 mil a year? Is Soriano supposed to say, "Actually Jim, I don't think I'll be productive enough to live up to that contract. I don't want to make you look stupid, so why don't we work out a more affordable deal?" I mean [expletive], if Hendry offered me a contract like that I'd accept in a heartbeat. Then I would proceed to put up a .004/.006/.009/.015 line, and everyone in the world would hate me and the GM for giving me such a contract. But, I wouldn't care at all because I would be filthy rich.
