UW wins appeal on behalf of Brust

I hope this doesn't turn into a regular occurrence now. It would get extremely annoying to see kids bail on their LOI.

Most kids gets let out of their LOI when a coach leaves/is fired. The only time I can recall it not happening was Satan down in Knoxville(and I'm not even sure of that one). The appeal was due to the Big Ten no-transfer rule, and I think they got it right. It's not a transfer, it's an uncommitted kid.

I think they got this one right because of the coaching change. My hope is it doesn't open the doors for kids to go from Michigan to OSU or Northwestern to Illinois for other reasons. I like the rule as a whole.

I do too. I don't see this affecting the rule itself though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Offutt won't be eligible til second semester of '10-'11 and then only have that semester, plus the '11-12 season remaining. I can't imagine him having much of an impact. But as you said, it's a walk on so no harm done.

I don't know what to think about the Negedu situation, I know he's been cleared by the doctors, but I'd still be a little nervous about him. Additionally, I can't imagine he's going to be the same player he was after his medical issues. Does Negedu have to sit out a season due to transfer, or it assumed he'll be granted a waiver? Either way you have him using a scholarship through the '12-'13 season at least. For a team that's already overloaded with questionable players taking up scholarships(Matt Roth for a 5th year????) it doesn't seem worth the risk. It also seems odd to say that you like them cause they want to play at Indiana when they're on their 3rd and 2nd schools respectively.

Uthoff, I know next to nothing about, but yeah he sounds less than encouraging when you consider how loaded the state of Illinois is in '11, not to mention the state of Indiana in '12.

Offutt will likely not be available until 2nd semester. And yes, he would only have 1 1/2 years left.

Negedu is definitely a nervewracking situation. On one hand, it would be nice to be the school to not keep him from what he wants to do just because of liability issues when the doctors have cleared him. On the other hand, you don't want to be seen as so desperate for a player that you'll risk somebody's life either. From what I've heard, my guess is he would get a waiver since it wasn't really his choice to transfer.

On Uthoff, I also know next to nothing about him. His high school coach said that college coaches are saying that he reminds them of Kyle Korver. I also wonder if he's worth the fuss to be worth a scholarship for those years. He apparently can shoot the 3 well even though he's playing the post in high school. At 6 foot 8, if he's a shooter both Butler and Indiana will want him because he fits both their systems so well.

As for the wanting to play at Indiana, at least for Offutt it was apparently the coaching uncertainty that caused him to not go to Indiana originally. I'm not sure about Negedu.

Negedu was Crean's first year, and it was assumed he was the reason Tijan Jobe was given a scholarship. Can't remember what/if any other schools were in it towards the end.

I'm fine with the Brust ruling. I wish he were coming to Iowa but I think it's fair when a coach leaves. Hypothetically if Iowa was a finalist for a recruit in the Big Ten and their coach left, I would be pissed if that player wanted to come to Iowa and the rule didn't allow it.

Terrence Jones to Washington (along with terrence Ross) over KU, UK, UCLA, Oregon, and OU. Kinda bummed we missed him, but he wasn't a necessity. UK has to be wondering how they missed on Jones and Leslie, though.

It really was Washington vs UK. I'm shocked Kentucky missed out on Jones and Leslie.

And it looks like Walt from Lost is one of the top West Coast 2012 prospects.

I'm assuming the bolded part is addressed to me. Well in the case of Offutt he came out and said he would have committed to IU in the first place if our coaching situation would have been more stable when he was being recruited. He said Mike Davis "somewhat" recruited him and at that time the writing was kind of on the wall for Mike anyways. So I really don't doubt his sincerity all that much and like you say, he is just a walk on so the risk is low. Anything at all he can add to our team, it is better than nothing.

Negedu...........well, I think you are right about Crean bringing on Jobe to try and land Negedu too. Although I think another aspect to the Jobe recruitment was the fact he is a great student and our APR was just getting hammered from the end of the Davis era and the Sampson teams. So if you have to suck for a couple years, it doesn't hurt to add a kid who can help your APR in the meantime. At least that is my theory, lol.

I think in the case of both players had IU basketball been in a stable position, they would have been here to begin with. But whatever, in the case of Negedu I think he has enough talent to be a positive addition to next year's team if he can get the NCAA to waive sitting out a year.

Carolina has two big guys next year; one of whom is the very very skinny John Henson. Gotta think Barnes will be playing the 4 some

He may very well end up there some, but Barnes is NOT a 4, not even close. He's a 2/3 in a 6'8 body. Very smooth, very quick, but McDermott was better around (his back to) the basket then Barnes was. He's not a low block player.

He still wouldn't play in the low post. But literally the only other players above 6'5" are Reggie Bullock who definitely isn't an option at the four and I guess the 6'6" Will Graves might see time there, too. They will be effectively playing four guards for much of the games, but Barnes will probably have to guard some 4's.

Emmanuel Negedu will not be coming to Indiana. He was cleared by doctors but the administration decided against allowing to play basketball for us.

And in other news Walter Offutt has been offered a scholarship by Ohio U. and appears to be leaning that way now rather than walking on at Indiana although a final decision has not been made yet.

So I am having a hard time thinking of anyone else worth adding for 2010. Oh well.

Edit - I forgot we are after this kid:

illini fans are so taken with chasson randle, but i have no idea why. he's certainly a very good player, but illinois is stocked at guard, and he's undersized for a 2. he's not great at anything but is solid at everything, i'd much rather have henry from that class.

if we can get henry and shaw from that class, i won't much care who else we get.

You already got Ryan Bowen back as a video coordinator, what more do you need? Now you are just getting greedy.

i wouldn't mind seeing randle play at iowa. i grew up watching acie earl and brad hopkins play at moline and i was glad i got to see them play in college and in the pros.

i'll root for him if for no other reason than he's a quad city guy.
