The Reds traded outfielder Willy Taveras and third baseman Adam Rosales to the Athletics today for infielder Aaron Miles and a player to be named later or cash, reports ESPN's Buster Olney. Let's break down this bad contract swap.

Taveras will earn $4MM in 2010. The speedy 28-year-old was a bust for the Reds in '09, hitting .240/.275/.285 in 437 plate appearances. Rosales did not hit well in the bigs either, but he did crush Triple A pitching in 125 plate appearances. Before the season Baseball America said he profiles as a "good utiltyman." He's played all around the infield in the minors, and mainly third base last year. Rosales' inclusion might even out the salary gap between Taveras and Miles.

Miles will earn $2.7MM in 2010, though the Cubs sent $1MM to the A's as part of a December '09 trade. Like Taveras, he was signed to a two-year deal despite being non-tendered by his former club and proceeded to have a terrible season.

This is DeRosa all over again. You trade your popular utility IF away and a short time later he's playing in your division again.

It really bites. My Cardinals don't win the World Series without Miles. I'm forever indebted to him.

The A's are DFAing Taveras, so essentially they traded Miles for a minor leaguer.

Not a bad trade for the A's. They get a 27 (in May) yr old 3rd baseman/UT who OPSed .855 in the minors and while he didn't have success under Baker, with a proper hitting coach he could do better. They only take on about another 1.3 mil from Miles to Tavares, which isn't a lot to write off these days.

Dumb trade. Aaron Miles plays the game the right way. He'll be good for the clubhouse and his versatility will be a boost to the Reds. Just another example of Walt Jocketty playing chess while everyone is playing checkers.

If he wasn't good at baseball he wouldn't have hit .317(!) and gotten a $5 million contract from Jim Hendry.

Recent history shows that Jim Hendry has given out far worse contracts to people far less deserving.

The A's get an upgrade from Miles to Rosales. That's certainly not worth the $1.3 million they ate with Tavares. Perhaps the minor leaguer is a 2009 draftee, that's why he wasn't named right away. I'm certain it's not Aroldis Chapman.

The end results show the error of judging players by their batting average. Too variable and doesn't measure skill as accurately as other metrics.

didn't Taveras guarantee he was going to steal 100 bases last year?

That was Willie Mays Hayes.

He may run like Mays, but he hits like [expletive].

Runs like Mays, hits like Miles?

Dusty is so bad. How in the world did that line get 437 plate appearances?

I have little doubt that Miles will cause us many a headache when we face Dusty and his Reds, but Id rather he give us those headaches 16 games out of the season than the full 162.

And the fact he will likely be taking ab's away from 1 of Rolen, Phillips, or Cabrera when he does play

Game 163, tie-breaker between the Reds and Cubs for the 2010 NLCentral championship in Cincinnati. Cubs lead 4-3 in the bottom of the 9th. Runner on 1st and 2 out, Miles hits a walk-off pinch-hit home run to beat the Cubs 5-4. Count on it.
