The project will be called "Wrigley 20-14" and include construction projects during the season so the Cubs can use it "for another 100 years," according to President Crane Kenney.

The focal point of the massive restructuring will be the long-talked-about "triangle building" to the west, a project that will include knocking down the outer wall on the third-base side to form a large open-air courtyard that would include concession areas and shops.

In the end, all of the concourse will be widened and include expanded restrooms, some of which will be completed for this season. It also means construction will be ongoing during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

This was talked about before, but now it looks to be very close to becoming a reality.

I don't understand the hyphen in "20-14."

To ensure uniformity of the name when being reported on would be my guess. So all outlets call it "Twenty-Fourteen", rather than it being called "Two Thousand Fourteen" by some channels.

I can't picture what they're talking about in regards to the "triangle building." I'm not opposed to it at all, but I can't really tell what they're describing.

You mean like where it is, or what it would look like when done?

Both, so thanks for the drawing and link.

That thing looks amazing.

I think if done right it could be a great addition. If it's just a bland parking garage with a couple concession stands, it will be lame. But that's all wasted real estate right now anyway.

I really like the open air courtyard idea in between the new building and the stadium, too. If they are also able to work out some sort of widening of the main indoor concourse as well, then I think it really could accomplish what they want to do.

This is the first time I've heard anything about knocking down the exterior 3rd base wall. I have a hard time imagining what that would look like.

Perhaps the biggest purpose of the triangle building will be the underground batting cages. Certainly something necessary when talking about renovations.

Has there been any more talk about a potential hotel across the street? Is that moving forward?

The thing that really jumps out at me about this picture is the "Parking" sign, I wonder if they are going to put in some underground parking for the general public, or if it's more for players, deliveries and premium/box/season ticket holders.

I'd have to assume it's for players and season ticket holders. The building is being built on the ground that is currently occupied by the player parking lot and a lot reserved for mostly season ticket holders. Unless they made that building a whole lot taller I can't imagine them having room for any more parking than that. Also, I have to wonder where the TV network trucks would sit as they usually park in the area that this building would cover.

Either way, it looks amazing.

I'm guessing it would eliminate the current ramps and involve pathways to and from the triangle building

That drawing has room for 5 levels of parking, which would mean 5 times as much parking, as well as use of the footprint of the current building (that building is still there, right?). That's still not enough for general public parking, but would put a dent in the season ticket holders.

The project parameters are still being hammered out with the city. Lots of the usual neighborhood handwringing can be found here:

As an out-of-town visitor, I would be thrilled to have access to a quality hotel this close to the ballpark.

Yeah, looks like one of the groups approved it, but another one doesn't like it.

Personally, I think that block of buildings looks pretty ratty and old as it is right now. I wouldn't mind overhauling it.

If it was open to the general public how much would it be for game days? $30? $40? $50?

My guess it will be VIP/luxury box only parking for games. But it could also be used the other 280 days of the year for all the bars in the area.

How many people drive to the bars in the area? I doubt they want to promote more driving to bars.

It's to commemorate the uniform numbers of two Cubs greats. Ernie Banks (14) and... uhm... Felix Pie?

O.K., maybe not.

20's the come to mind for me are Jerome Walton, Corey Patterson, Adolfo Phillips, Bobby Dernier.
