To those who don't think Marshall will be in the competition to make the rotation out of Spring Training...

Samardzija's a veteran?

Sure he's been on the big league team for 2 years now.

There's nothing in that article that says the Cubs want Marshall in the rotation. It says Marshall likes starting better- which we already knew. Marshall also says he likes relieving which says that he thinks he'll end up working out of the pen.

The rotation probably comes down to Gorzelany 4 and Smardz 5 unless he's really terrible in ST or Silva is shockingly good- by which by mean not horrible.

True, but that's not what I was claiming. Someone made an argument that the Cubs options for 5th starter were between Silva, Gorz and the Shark and listed their not so good stats as starters to make their point. Of course, he left out the strongest option for 5th starter, Marshall. He then claimed, as you just did, that he thinks Marshall will be in the pen, without making an argument as to why. This article says that the Cubs consider him one of 4 candidates to make the rotation. So, going off of the evidence, he shouldn't be counted out just yet.

Marshall is clearly an option, the argument against him getting the job is he's been the best candidate for years and they keep passing him by, and have stated repeatedly that they prefer him in the bullpen.

Sheets is only seeking a 1 year deal in the $8-9m range according to this guy. [expletive] Jim, save the $2-3m (at minimum) that you would waste on Calero or Park and just stretch the budget a little to fit Sheets in.

Sheets is said to be seeking a one-year deal worth between $8-9 million. A major-league source told CSNBayArea.com that Oakland’s offer is “absolutely” in that range.

He signed for 1yr /8mil. Too much money IMO

If all 8 is guaranteed, it's more than I would have done. 4-5 with incentives to 8 sounds about right.

Incentives would have to go well past 8 for a pitcher of Sheets' caliber at that small a base.

I like the signing in a vaccuum, but the A's seem really seem to be operating without a rudder the past couple seasons.

I've thought that as well.

via MLBTR:

12:24pm: SI.com's Jon Heyman says (via Twitter) that Sheets will get $10MM in 2010 plus performance bonuses. Pretty sweet deal for a guy that missed all of last season.

$10MM? Really?

A 1 yr deal? I wonder what kind of prospects the A's will recieve for him at the deadline...

Exactly... I wonder if there is a way to structure contracts such that they back load the payments within individual years? If they sign him for the 8mm that's reported, but only pay him 2-3 mill early and then the rest at the end of the season they could possibly get some great prospects via trade if he works out and not really have to spend much money.

After he shows he has nothing left, Littlefield will talk Hendry into trading for him at the trade deadline, asking for no incentives.

According to this, the deal is for 10 million plus bonuses.

That's a lot of money. Perhaps more than I'd be willing to pay.

I'd be interested in Bedard at this point, if he's likely to be healthy by the ASB.

It looks like the A's convinced him off his demands for a 2-yr deal by giving him a lucrative 1 year deal.

My guess is that the A's are hoping that either he pitches so well for them that he's a type A free agent which would let them get some draft picks when he leaves or that they can deal him for prospects at the deadline.

Yeah, it's probably a good deal for them if he's healthy. They key is going to be if he's healthy. Thing is, he'd have been a really good deal for any team if he is healthy, so we'll just have to wait and see.
