I am catching a connecting flight in Vegas this Saturday (3 hour lay over) I might stop by Cesars a slap $50 down on the Nats to make the playoffs and maybe another $50 on their W/L O/U. Anyone know what their playoff odds are? They gotta be like 35-50 to 1.

Marquis's ERA+ was 39 points better before signing this contract compared to his last one. And this one was more favorable to the team.

And he's three years older and the economic climate is significantly different than three years ago.

And 39 is a hell of a lot ERA+ points. The Marquis contract with the Cubs was pee your pants hilarious.

Over the length of the contract he was worth roughly 32 million.

you say that like it's a proven fact

those fangraph figures can be useful and fun to look at, but come on. maruis was a league average starter with the cubs. a league average starter is not worth 3/32

The contract was 3/21. I'm not justifying the contract, 3 years was pretty boneheaded, but Marquis held up his end of it. 7 million a year, like it or not, is pretty normal for a league average pitcher.

According to the going rate for free agent WAR, yes.

so you're saying he was worth 3/32, but it doesn't justify 3/21? im confused

I'm saying he ended up being well worth his contract. I'm not saying I would have signed him to it or that it was a good move at the time.

So you're going to argue it was a smart contract to hand out when it was signed. I was one of the staunchest defenders of Marquis while he was on the Cubs, arguing the very real value of a guy who pitches every 5 days at average-above average levels. Doesn't mean the contract was anything but laughable.

ETA: Just read the rest of the thread.

The production we got out of Marquis for 3/21 was completely in line for they #5/4 starter on a team that was operating with the type of payroll we had at the time. Also gotta remember that it was important to Hendry to bring in 2 pitchers that offseason a guy who could be a solid 2/3 (Lilly) and a innings eater who could be above replacement level/around league average (Marquis). This was coming after 2006 when guys like Glendon Rusch, Jerome Williams, Les Walrond, John Koronka, and those other gems were trotted out there everyday on our way to nearly 100 losses. Also given the economic climate of the time the contract was relatively in line with what other FA starting pitchers were getting in relation to their perceived value Zito, Schmidt, Lilly, Suppan, and Meche all got much larger deals than Marquis did.

It doesn't matter what was important to Hendry.

This signing makes more sense than the Nationals than anyone else. They have a young rotation and they use their bullpen a ton. Their bullpen isn't good to begin with and worthless when burnt out. That's why it makes sense for the Nats to sign Capps too.

Marquis might be their Opening Day starter. Their #2 pitcher for most of the year was Shairon Martis.

The Nats could do something in 2011. A healthy rotation of Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann, John Lannan, Jason Marquis and Ross Detwiler/Shairon Martis could get 85+ wins with a strong offense.

Shairon Martis.

I have literally never heard of this guy

He pitched a no-hitter for the Netherlands against Panama in the first WBC.
