What the hell? He just used Green Bay as an example of why you should stick with the same scheme.

Huh?

Green Bay changed to a 3-4 and turned from a bad defense to a top defense in one season YOU DOLT!

And this pansy writers didn't even call him on it. What a moron.

i'm trying not to get too upset until i see who they actually bring in, but i don't have my hopes up based on what they are saying today.

They're going to hire people who agree with Lovie and who don't have much clout (because they won't worry about being lame ducks). It's not going to be pretty.

Yeah, that's what i'm getting from this too. But I'm clinging to a tiny scrap of hope that this is all just talk and the actions will end up reflecting something different. Like I said, I don't have my hopes up.

Lovie is getting frustrated, almost angry.

[expletive] you Lovie. I'm more convinced than ever that you need to go.

Frustrated at what? I got the impression the writers were lobbing softballs his way.

Getting angry about the questions? WTF does he expect a damn parade? F-off, Lovie. You're teams have sucked the last few years. Stand up there and face the music and be thankful you are still coaching.

He gets pissed when people question him. It wasn't all softballs. They were asking about third down problems, repeated failures, the contradiction of needing change but keeping the scheme the same, questioning the value of maintaining a scheme that has failed repeatedly.

He sounded angry toward the end, and the last words he spoke makes it sound like they offered Marinelli the DC job and he turned it down.

"Rod wants to remain in his current position as the assistant head coach, helping me with stuff like that, and coaching the defensive line. That's a full-time job."

Wow.

What a load of malarkey. This is really reminding me of those final Waanstedt years, the meandering around for extra seasons of the same old crap over & over again.

Our fearless leaders have no clue what to do, and our owners don't have the stomach to fire them. It's really as simple as that.

If the Bears do improve next year, it will be nothing but blind luck. More likely, 2010 is going to be an ugly season of Bears football. Possibly even catastrophically ugly.

I think Marinelli found out that power ain't all it's cracked up to be.

Yeah, think about that. The Bears want to bring in a guy to run Lovie's scheme. That screams Marinelli.

Yet he turned down the job quickly. I don't know about you, but that tells me Marinelli doesn't smell success any time soon for this bunch.

I believe you're correct, should a miracle somehow occur, Lovie will right there to tell everyone I told you so.

If they put up another dud of a season offensively then the Cutler-hate should ratchet up quite nicely and we can go ahead and burn that bridge.

Good time.

I can't remember what happened at the press conference last year, but did the management demand the Bears make the playoffs in 2009 or serious changes would have taken place?

"We're not gonna try harder because we were already trying as hard as we could this year."

Yeah.

And big changes need to be made, but the system works so it doesn't need to be changed. But we're going to make changes, except that those changes will be to run the old system so they aren't really going to be changes.

My brain is fried.

Which would be a shame because, he's got the talent to be one of the best Bear QB's ever - even without the likes of greatest WR of all time (according to many on the Score and others) Brandon Marshall, he still managed to throw more TD passes than Orton.

This just seems so strange and could be really counter productive long term. Bringing in two new coordinators and multiple other assistants but keeping a lame duck head coach and GM?

They could make the right hires and hit it out of the park but I think the NFC North is pretty happy about the possibility of Cutler having 4 OC's in 4 years. It's the one thing that could really screw him up.

Didn't realize that Lovie has lost at least 2 coaches every year since he's been the coach.

Almost all of them defensive coaches. Says something about the ability to work with Lovie Smith in the scheme he likes. I believe there is a crapload of evidence that he's just a stubborn dunce who cannot think creatively and will not tolerate any meandering from the hard and fast rule of his way or highway, the hell with results.

The best coaches adapt strategy to the talent they have to work with, Lovie never has, and never will do that.

With a likely autonomous OC, it's entirely possible that they can bring in a guy that would be here longer than Lovie on that side of the ball. Teams keep coordinators all the time even as head coaches change. But I doubt the Bears pull it off.

This is what I was thinking of as well, there's something to work with on the offensive side, the right coach, putting to use what he has could make it work. But numb-nuts would rather try to fit a square peg into a circular hole.

This is true. I guess it will depend on how the offense and team performs as a whole. If they struggle again they're obviously more likely to clean house which I think could be really damaging. If it's Martz he's not an easy guy to work with and might not be attractive to a guy like Cowher.
