I hate to sound like Meph here, but ND was 18th in the poll going into Michigan. They lose on a TD pass with 12 seconds left in the game, drop out of the poll, and now have 9 votes. If that doesn't happen, they're probably sniffing the top 10 if only by sheer attrition. I don't see the huge difference between ND as a team whether they win or lose that UM game, but apparently it makes about 20 ranking spots worth of difference.

Which one of those teams do you think ND should be ranked ahead of?

Are you asking which teams ND could beat head to head or which teams have performed worse against their schedule than ND has performed against its own?

You can play that if your team loses a close one but then has some convincing wins and looks good.

You can't play that when your team has been in 4 games decided on the last possession and has won 3 of them. 2 of those games were at home. There's a good chance that 2 of those teams won't make a bowl game.

Notre Dame is 28th in the Sagarin ratings. The 4 last-possession games you've had have been against 42, 43, 47 and 80.

The latter.

well, I don't know the schedules of most of those teams. But OU has 2 wins against bad teams and 2 close losses against the only good teams they've played. I don't like ND's chances against OU head to head, but that's a pretty weak effort through 4 games.

Sure, and they played against PU without their #1: RB, WR, FB and half of their #1 QB. Their QB, RB, and FB are expected back for USC in 2 weeks, so it isn't like all those guys will be out the rest of the year. UW beat USC 2 weeks ago. So it's not like they're a terrible team.

Seems like a lot of games this year, more than usual, are coming down to the 4th quarter. Maybe parity is here in CFB. There are a handful of teams at the very top, but after that, you are just playing for a W. So how close those wins are losses are maybe less relevant than in years past. Just come away with a W and don't worry about being pretty.

I don't much care where ND is ranked October 4. The only reason it's relevant at all is it's really hard to jump teams later in the year. So if ND isn't getting votes now, even if they run the table (however unlikely), jumping the 27 or so teams that are ahead of them is going to be almost impossible.

ETA: I'm not suggesting ND could or should be ranked #1 if they finish 11-1. I'm saying if they finish 11-1, they'll finish lower in the top 10 than they would if they started the run already ranked.

I'm surprised Iowa actually moved up. I'd thought they'd drop for sure. It looks like if they can beat Michigan they are in the top ten.

Same here. Makes up for the 12 spot drop through the first 3 games.

Yes. That's how I'm going to justify it too.

Iowa definitely had no business moving up

And they had no business staying in the 30's going into the PSU game.

They started 21st and have gone 5-0 with the 35th toughest schedule. They have a 35-3 win at ISU which is looking better, a fairly decisive win against Arizona who is 22nd in sagarin and the 21-10 win at PSU. They're ranked 9th in Sagarin and average in the top 10 in computer polls.

12th is about right.

throw it down the field a-holes.

I was thinking the same thing, but from my side of the ball. Penn State's "Hi-Def Offense" has turned into HB Dives and dump passes over the middle

that's because our offensive line usually gives clark about 0.5 seconds to throw the ball.

As usual, you're right and whoever disagrees is wrong and there's no discussion to be had.

don't worry about abuck. His team lost on a blocked PAT this weekend.

Auburn looked ok against Tennessee. The game would have been much different if UT had a QB that was even average...Crompton did get better in the 4th quarter though.

AU should be ranked for the first time this year, and I think they will be favored against Arkansas.

Auburn definitely looked worlds better than last year. Malzahn is a great offensive coordinator.

I thought the Tennessee defense played great, but the offense was lackluster (at best). I couldn't figure out why in the world Lane Kiffin wanted to throw the ball as much as he did. We need to run the ball much more than we did Saturday if we have any chance of winning some of these middle of the road SEC games.

I will say though, the final pass of the game - the TD to Denarius Moore - was a great throw.
