I'll admit to jumping the gun on Cameron mainly because of his age, so I checked out his advanced stats from last year and he's actually quite productive. His WARP3 last year was 7.3 and his VORP of 25.8 was 8th among all center fielders last year.

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1070&position=OF#value

Take a look at the last two columns. Dollars is how much money he was worth. Salary is self explanatory.

So if I'm reading that right, he's been worth more than he's been paid every year but 2005?

Far more. Yes.

If we could get him on a one year deal for 10 mil, we absolutely should.

I could see the Cubs signing Cameron and moving Fuku back to right field.

Im never right, so even if this is being discussed, im pretty excited I said before it was even mentioned.

I much rather give Colvin a shot in CF with Fuku going to right, instead of signing another "veteran" player.

The problem is Hendry will surely give him an awful contract. We're not making the playoffs next year anyways, and we don't have a ton of money for the next few years, so I don't want to see 10M+ of it going to an aging CF.

Plus he's black, so the fans will hate him and he'll get all pissy anyways.

Colvin needs more time in the minors. I'm happy for his production since his callup, but he could stand to work on a few more things in AAA before the Cubs hand him the CF job on a silver platter.

Signing Cameron to a one year deal would be a really good idea, imo.

You may be right, and if Cameron does indeed sign for a reasonable 1 yr deal, then I am all for do that, and letting Colvin be a 210 September callup. But between an overpaid Cameron and and young, cheap OF in Colvin, you know I much rather err on the side of being cheap, especially if the Cubs have to eat alot of Bradley's contract.

When I first heard about Cameron I was absolutely turned off by the idea, but after thinking about it for a while I think he could be a solid acquisition for the right price (under $8 mil.) I could see Hendry adding Cameron and signing one of Scutaro (move Theriot to 2B), Hudson, Lopez to fill the 2B gap.

If the Cardinals don't resign Holliday or DeRosa I think we will be the favorites to win next year. Also yeah we have a lot of committed money for 2010 but after next year we potentially lose Lee, Aram, and Lilly. That's nearly $45 mil. coming off the books. We could afford to spend a little money this year if we decided that at least 1-2 of those guys wouldn't be brought back.

Why is this a foregone conclusion?

It's not. However, Soriano will have to rebound for the Cubs to have a decent chance at making the playoffs next year.

And Lee can't really take a step back either.

Oh my God, HE'S MARK-FREAKIN'-DEROSA.

Well Rick Morrisey thinks they have to resign him to right a wrong and shut everybody up, so there's that.

I'm sure these people don't care but he turns 35 this February and will have wrist surgery.

Its been 4 years, and Sox fans wont stop whining about trading away the great Aaron Rowand, so we might have to get used to this for a while. While DeRosa would have been helpful when Ramirez was out, I cant see him having been much of a difference maker when we were getting Ike Turnered by the Rockies, Phillies, and Dodgers in early August.

Or Ramirez plays a full season and Soto doesn't suck. I don't think their payoff chances rely solely on Soriano's production.

Lets look at it this way. Assuming Soriano and Soto rebound from horrid seasons, the team is good enough to survive with Fox or Hoffpauir in RF(Kosuke in CF) or Colvin or Reed in CF(Kosuke in RF). If that doesnt work out, we should still be in good enough position to aquire a better player than Cameron at the trade deadline.

Now if Soriano and Soto both have horrible seasons again, chances are that Mike Cameron wont be enough to save us anyway.

Yeah well if his replacement is Joe-Freakin'-Thurston, Julio Lugo, or Kahlil Greene I think losing DeRosa would have a pretty big impact on the Cards.

Considering how DeRosa has played for the Cardinals, that's no guarantee.

this would be THE typical Cubs move: Get a geezer past his prime (if Cameron ever had a prime).

Hey. He was traded for Ken Griffey, Jr. One of the greatest players of our generation.

He's got to be good if the Reds got Griffey for him 10 years ago.

And yes, OMC, this would be the ultimate Cubs move: Sign a guy who used to be good a long time ago but is worthless now, and then the front office crows about the big-name FA we signed and how they're trying their damndest to win.

Did you even read the rest of the thread? Cameron is not worthless. Even if you were ignoring his defense, he's still average.

That wouldn't really make sense because Cameron has pretty much been the same hitter for the last 12 years. He's old, that's about the only mark against him.

There are far better options out there than Mike Cameron. Or, certainly far better options out there for the money he'd sign for.

If Hendry makes it public he wants a guy, he won't stop until he gets him. Unfortunately, it's never the right guy, and he always ends up overpaying.

I suppose if all the better OF'ers become too expensive and Cameron is the best option left for us and he signs for a reasonable deal, I'd be ok with it.

I'm just afraid with his age and inevitably declining skills that he'll get massively overpaid and start to hit the wall the second the Cubs uniform touches his back.

Cameron would be an OK option if we were looking for a number 6 or 7 hitter, but were not, we need, as Lou said a middle of the order run producer. Mike Cameron is not that. At best he could be a number 2 hitter. Mike Camerons line will more than likely be worse than Milton Bradleys, but who cares, hes a great guy. If we knew that Soriano and Soto would rebound next year, I suppose we could sign Cameron for 5-6 mil, if we have to eat Bradleys contract and hopefully Miles' for desert.
