Angels acquire Kazmir from Rays for minor leaguers

Recommended Posts

The Angels are close to acquiring Scott Kazmir from the Rays, according to MLB.com's Lyle Spencer. Spencer reports that the Rays are "on the verge" of sending Kazmir west for a pair of prospects, Alexander Torres and Matthew Sweeney.

How does a 25 year old, fairly highly touted, Left hander get through waivers?

I don't understand how this works. Are all GM's sent a fax when a player is put on waivers? Do they get a call from the league? Email?

Maybe he was put on waivers at 3 am or something. I don't know.

But yeah, that's really strange that he'd pass through like that.

Sweeney and Torres were ranked as the Angels' No. 18 and 24 prospects, respectively, by BA entering the season.

Very poor return for Kazmir.

And it's not as if the Rays are out of contention. Why make this deal unless you're getting an unbelievable package in return?

I could understand trading Kazmir due to budget constraints, but like Tim said, why trade when you're still in it? And for such a little return, no less?

Kazmir could have easily been traded in the off-season if they needed to unload the money. There is no reason this had to be done now.

Angels acquired LHP Scott Kazmir from the Rays for 3B Matt Sweeney and P Alex Torres.

The timing of the deal is still strange, but ultimately it looks like this deal could benefit the Rays. While Kazmir has pitched well his past three starts, he's lost a considerable amount of velocity and doesn't project as the ace the Rays would be paying him to be over the next few years. That said, this deal should still give the Angels the depth they've sought all year, and they're more positioned to take on a contract like Kazmir's than Tampa Bay. The Rays probably will hand his rotation spot to Andy Sonnanstine or Wade Davis for now.

Kazmir is due 8M next year and 12M in '11. He's been awful all year(likely due to injuries) If they don't think he's a good bet to give them complete seasons, this is a good deal to get out from under his contract.

If it were me, though, I'd probably have finished the season with him and dealt him in the offseason.

Unless the Rays GM thinks that his arm is about to fall off and he wouldn't last that long.

Oh, and loosely related to this, is Arte Moreno the best owner in sports?

no. They still ignore a lot of available information on players and base their decision making too heavily purely on scouting; still play too much small-ball; etc.

However, they're a pretty well run org for the most part.

Oh, as for Kazmir...

I'd shut him down for two weeks on the DL and see if that helps him recover some velocity going into the last couple weeks. It's a great deal for Anaheim even if they get zero from him this year.

Well how hands on do you want him to be? I have a hard time attributing much blame to the owner for how the manager of his club manages.

Thinking about where the Angels were perceived when he took over to where they are today, I can't think of anyone better.
