I don't know what irritates me more..seeing Gregg give up a homer to end the game or seeing him walk to the dugout like nothing happened after giving up the homer to end the game.

I know this blows chunks, but I never quite understand this criticism. Do you want the guy to break into tears on the mound after an outing like this, or what?

I don't get why anyone would give up a sandwich pick for Gregg when he's been this bad this year and is on the wrong side of 30.

nobody gives up sandwich picks. they're picks that are created.

these are players that were signed in 2006-07 to lose picks in the 2007 draft:

first round picks lost for: Frank Catalanotto, Carlos Lee, Julio Lugo, Jason Schmidt, Gary Matthews Jr., Moises Alou

second round picks lost for: Alfonso Soriano, Danys Baez, Jeff Suppan, Barry Zito, Roberto Hernandez, Woody Williams, Justin Speier

so as you can see, MLB teams often don't make decisions with the amateur draft in mind.

Gregg out as the closer (until Lou changes his mind again, we know what sort of attention span the man has when it comes to major personnel changes).

After Kevin Gregg gave up four two-out runs in the ninth inning in a 4-1 loss to the Padres on Monday night, Piniella said he plans on removing Gregg from the closer's role.

"I think we're going to make some changes as far as what we're going to do in late innings," Piniella said. "We'll have some more tomorrow."

Piniella didn't say who would be his new closer, though Carlos Marmol and Angel Guzman are considered the likeliest candidates.

...

"I can name a few of them, believe me," Piniella said. "They all end the same way, with a home run ball."

"It sucked," Gregg said. "I wasn't pitching. I went away from what I wanted to do, didn't executive my pitches and cost us the game."

Told that Piniella was going to make changes, Gregg said: "I could see why he's (ticked). I'd be (ticked). I'm (Ticked) right now. That's a crappy effort I just put forth on the field. I could have regrouped. I still have to get people out."

Has anyone confirmed if Santo is alive still?

:-))

Not really sure why that's funny, but ok.

It was a joke, wasn't it?!

Santo made the trip to SD? Usually he skips the road trips cross country.

And along the lines of Gregg losing the closer role, there is nobody else I really trust on the team to close (not that I trust Greeg, but there is nobody that would do a better job imo). I wouldn't mind us either sending Berg down or cutting Heilman and bringing up Cashner to see how he might do. But we will probably just bring Samardzija back up.

Absolutely not. The one thing we can't afford to do this season is rush Cashner.

Berg already was sent down. He went down to make room on the roster for Lilly.

Agreed. Bringing up Cashner would be a desparate move to try and clinge onto a playoff spot. Cardinals are likely a one and done team ( ) should they make the playoffs, and we know the Cubs would be one and down. No need to waste an option year on basically a lost yr.

Good thing these Padres play consistently and played up to the same level against the Cardinals, right?

Maybe the Cardinals are just better than us?

Are they Kyle Blanks better?

Seriously, what happened to Gregg? The Cardinals have turned Ryan Franklin into steroid-era Eric Gagne and we picked up a supposedly half-decent closer and he has been awful. No homers given up last year until Ward and he's given up 12 this year. There is no explanation anyone can give me for such a dramatic spike.

No explanation? I'd give up 0 HRs in whatever the hell the ballpark in Miami is called and I probably can't even hit 75 on the radar gun.

Though giving up a HR on such a cool night at Petco is quite the remarkable feat, even for Gregg. It's a shame the scouting report on Blanks ability to hit FBs very far wasn't given to the Cubs.

That'd be horrible.

Yesssssssssssssssss...it's so sweet to be wrong.

Please only use Marshall and Guzman, Lou.

I forget if Gregg can pitch tonight, but I'd rather have him pitch here, at night, than anywhere else

Your fault.

Guess the minor league forum is the place to be the rest of '09...

that's different from the first part of '09 why?

Sorry. Didn't mean to imply the minors are worthy of attention only towards the end of the season... It's just that for many of us, there wasn't much to be excited about in the system until some of the kids showed significant promise this year.

Yeah 'cuz he doesn't care if the team wins or not.

I think you can be pretty sure he wanted to break something after that game. I don't think he looks like he doesn't care; when he walks off the field, he looks like he's really really pissed and has to control himself or he'd start hitting something.

The most irritating facet of the night was the BB to Eckstein, that was unforgivable, how do you walk that little sh*t? Why didn't he just throw the ball down the middle of the plate - here it is ,you little sh*t, hit it is as hard as you can.

By the way the Cubs are going to get swept in SD again, book it.

I can't believe in the 3 games I've been to this season that Gregg has appeared in, he hasn't given up a hit yet alone a run - and just 1 walk.

So who wants to give me season tix? :)

It has been awhile since weve had this many age appropriate prospects to be excited about.
