As much as I am a believer in teh pixi3 dust, I'm willing to wait one more start when Smoltz will face an actual MLB lineup and not the Padres.

Normally I would agree with this, but the Padres did just take 2 of 3 from the Cubs.

yeah but the cubs suck.

And how.

Smoltz is now claiming he was tipping his pitches, and "The Great Chris Carpenter" and "God Dave Duncan" were the ones who noticed it...

Yeah, I really find it hard to believe that Carpenter and Duncan found his flaws and the Boston PC couldn't. I think his first start was a product of facing the Padres nothing more, nothing less.

His issue with the Red Sox appeared to have been his command within the strike zone. He didn't have problems throwing strikes, but he wasn't throwing quality strikes. He was leaving pitches up and out over the plate. There really didn't appear to be big issues with his stuff, just where he was throwing it.

I love how everyone goes "LOL well its the Nats so that won't matter either"

The Nats are (NL Ranks)...

6th in team BA

2nd in team OBP

6th in team SLG

5th in team OPS

6th in Runs scored

So yeah they are a Top 5 offense in the NL, but that doesn't count.

See we aren't the only ones complaining about types of magic aiding the Cardinals. From Cransik's article:

After 40 forgettable innings in Boston, Smoltz struck out nine batters in five shutout innings in his first start as a Cardinal. The performance generated hope that he'll join Jeff Weaver, Kyle Lohse, Joel Pineiro and numerous other pitchers on the list of David Duncan revival stories.

"It looks like he drank the magic potion, huh?" said a National League executive.

I was thinking black tar heroin + speed. They pitch damn good, but it takes a while to convince them they weren't really playing pink elephants after the game.

I refuse to believe that drugs had anything to due with turning bunch of career journeymen like Joel Pineiro, Kyle Lohse, Jeff Weaver, Jeff Suppan, Woody Williams, and Ryan Franklin and a long washed up John Smoltz into superstars, not to mention takig Chris Carpenter whose never been healthy inot a guy who can pitch 100 PPG without a sweat. And then theres the Its pure Dave Duncan. No pixie dust. no mystery cream in a paper bag marked Cemens that nobody else is around near. And its only logical that as soon as the leave St Lou, they turn back into garbage, right Jeff, Jeff, and Woody.

Carpenter pitched a total of 21 innings in 2007 and 2008 combined.

To be fair, Rich Harden has been with the Cubs for a full season plus a month and has missed six starts. He had what, 13 starts in 06-07 combined?

Yes, and if he'd pitched like Chris Carpenter has this year I'm sure we wouldn't shut up about how awesome that was. The fact is, he hasn't. He's been good most of the time, but pretty horrible others.

Okay then we can point to Randy Wells coming out of nowhere and being a huge success.

Joel Pineiro. Guys coming out of nowhere to succeed happens a hell of a lot more than proven sucky pitchers becoming upper-level starters late in their career.

agreed, so what are the odds that he'd stay healthy for the vast majority of this year and pitch at a cy young level? pretty damn small.

I had no intention of getting involved in this pissing match, but anyone should understand the difference between the unlikelihood of Chris Carpenter's healthy season and Rich Harden's healthy season. It isn't that difficult.
