bunting by anyone besides the pitcher is dumb

/facepalm

Seriously Der, look up from your spreadsheet and watch the game on occasion, you might learn something.

Is watching the game "on occasion" what led you to respond to me in a gamethread that Neil Cotts wasn't "that bad"? If so, I'll go w/ Derwood's spreadsheet.

Batting from second to third when you need a single run to win the game. There, that's the only time a non-pitcher bunting could be a good thing. Never ever first to second with a hitter, and that second to third is rare.

The worst thing about the whole thing is that LaRussa may get Lou's job after this season. The Cubs covet Cards and the Cards covet cubs. Stay tuned.

This is the part of the OP that intrigues me. By all accounts, TLR despises the Cubs and everything they stand for, and I shudder to think of him in a Cubs uniform, and I dont think hed ever want to wear one. On the other hand, TLR seems like the kind of arrogent prick who could take the job, on the off chance that the Cubs dont win the WS this year just so he could say that he was the one to finally take the Cubs there and say screw you, your welcome.

I've seen TLR do more with less for the majority of his time in St. Louis.

Whatever your opinion is of him personally, I don't think there's much of a question that he's one of the games best managers. St. Louis fans may not truly appreciate him till he leaves, and Cub fans will rejoice when he does.

Does he out think himself on occasion? Sure, but what manager or coach doesn't?

He has the third most wins in the history of the game, and his teams almost always play meaningful games in September and often in October. He's shown that he can win with talented high payroll teams and flawed mid salary teams.

I also think it's pretty funny that some people (in St. Louis and Chicago) talk about what a jerk he is. His Animal Rescue Foundation is a fantastic charity that he's very involved with, and not for the PR. Hate him because he wins. Hate him because he's not Whitey Herzog. But hating him for being a selfish jerk seems a little ridiculous.

I'm not saying this is the case here, but being a selfish jerk and doing good charity work are not mutually exclusive.

Oh, and I'd trade Lou + Larry for TLR + DD any day.

I'm going to hate him because he's a litigious drunk driver.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but i've personally witnessed him have to be restrained while leaving a ballpark because a fan called him a drunk. The fan made the comment and LaRussa responded with something along the lines of "YOU SON OF A -" and took off after the fan, causing him to have to be restrained.

He's a prick. If he doesn't like those comments, I'd suggest that he stop getting DUI's.

Agreed. I just thought the discussion deserved a more balanced look at the man.

Is he perfect? No.

As far as the DUI, yeah, that was a stupid mistake. Glass houses.

This just isn't true. LaRussa ripped the paper there a couple years ago in '0 when we had a slow start and they wrote looks like 99 years. Said it was a joke. He's also buddies with Lou.

You seriously think that just because he donates to charity that automatically means he can't be an a-hole or a bad person?

SERIOUSLY?

Yes! There is an honesty in that I can respect :)

Seriously. It's not a charity he donates to, it's a charity he FOUNDED. There's a difference.

Once again, is he perfect? No. But I think he's a pretty good human being.

Like Tim pointed out, it's cool if you don't like him because he managed the Sox, and manages the Cubs' main rival. I can respect that. (Not that my opinion or respect should count for anything)

But he's very clearly a complete prick. Founding a charity to help animals does not make you a good person. There are plenty of people who are horrible to other people but love animals. TLR is clearly a douche. There's no arguing that fact. It's nice that he wants to remove your cats uterus and everything, but he's still a jerk.

There's got to be a photo of that out there somewhere. That'd be fascinating.

I wonder how well an authentic 1973 Tony LaRussa Cubs throwback jersey would go over in Wrigley?

I think it would be more like throwaway jersey. :D

Either/Or is the trigger point here; hating him because he managed both is like arriving at the party after the cops have confiscated the dummy dust and the rent-a-dates.

That is an astute obsevation....for him to take the Cubs to the top without his 'roid laden A's or talent clogged Cards would be like the Holy Grail in his career. The thing is, he won't ever win another WS. Just look at the lineup he put out there on Wed when they lost 10 to 0.

And as to this stuff about his winning record, PLEASE! In a 1,000 games with an average W.Sox team he won 12 more games than he lost. And he is not the man now that he was back then.

If he'd lead us to the Promised Land I can guarantee you it would be a top seller.

Right now I just want to win. I dropped my hatred of Jimmy Edmonds last year after he did quite well for us. If I can do that, then anything is possible.

Pujols and Ludwick were both very nice, stopping to shake hands and such. TLR, not so pleasant. This was the day of the division clincher last season.
