Roster moves afoot: The Cubs will send a reliever, likely Jeff Samardzija or Jeff Stevens, to Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday to make room for starter Tom Gorzelanny. Samardzija has been ineffective against left-handed hitters, who are batting .393 against him.

"The stuff looks good to me," Piniella said, adding Samardzija's command is the real problem. "He throws a lot of pitches, he falls behind, he walks people -- and that's not good."

Piniella also said Aaron Miles is almost ready to return from Iowa, which could mean a demotion for Andres Blanco.

SCREW AARON MILES

and if Stevens is sent down over Samardzija, Lou should be fired

I would think Baker would be the one to go since they need a guy that can actually play SS -Blanco over a guy that can back up 3rd- Baker. Neither are hitting much so defense should win out.

Did they send Atkins back down yet?

Who goes down when Soto comes off the DL?

Here comes A. Miles to the rescue! His injury has been the one that affected the Cubs the most. I don't have the stats, but I'm sure their record has been terrible since he went on the DL. :-)) :-))

At some point you just have to admit the mistake and release Miles. Blanco is the best defensive infielder the Cubs have so when they send him back down, I hope the writers harass Lou to the point of tantrum about why Fox couldn't play 3rd every day why Ramirez was out, but yet they are willing to forego defense for Aaron F'in Miles. The truth is, for anyone on the Cubs to say they value defense is a joke. A GM that signs Soriano and Bradley to play the outfield and does not upgrade the shortstop position doesn't care about defense.

Tonight, Lou could have started Fuld in CF and Fukudome in RF to give Wells a better defense. Since Bradley can't hit left handed there really is no reason for him to start and weaken the outfield defense.

You know, I'll go ahead and say it. I love Andres Blanco. I think his glove is so good that he absolutely deserves a spot on the team. Miles brings nothing to the table.

And Lou's not stupid. Shark will be gone. I'm also strangely excited to see Gorzelanny. His minor league numbers and limited success in the majors seem to suggest he's capable of being a decent pitcher in this league. Hopefully he can pitch well for us.

Yes. He went back down the day after his second outing for the Cubs. Sam Fuld came back up.

Aaron Miles after 21 games (87 ABs) with the I-Cubs:

.253/.267/.299/.566 with 4 2Bs, 0 3Bs, 0 HRs, and 5 errors

GRIT!

Having that bat in the lineup will be huge....

The fact that this conversation is even happening makes me sick.

If Hendry refuses to admit signing Miles was a mistake they at least need to keep him on the DL until rosters expand. That would make sending Baker down or exposing Blanco to waivers unnecessary.

That wasn't possible based on when he started his rehab assignment. In fact, I think they waited as long as they possibly could before they brought him back.

And I don't see why exposing Blanco would be a big concern. Everybody in the league knew he was very good defensively and was poor offensively. And yet nobody was willing to give him a major league deal when he was in free agency for two years in a row. It's possible somebody picks him up, but it's not altogether likely.

As long as Miles is coming back as the 2nd backup MI, I'll be fine with him being on the team. He can get the very occasional start at SS until September (1-2 starts) plus pinch-hit appearances against a left-hander (although hopefully after Baker and after Reed when he returns).

I'm not looking forward to his first start. He hasn't really had a chance to work with Rothschild yet. I am curious to see how he does by the time September comes around and Larry's had some time to work with him.

Relax, their just trying to boost Miles trade value. Their hoping for a sack of sunflower seeds in addition to the 3 bats.

Im going to go with Hoffpauir. We need that defensive replacement outfielder in late inings, and then Fuld will probably follow when Reed comes back, and then they both come back in September/

put me in the camp that prefers Blanco to Miles, but it probably doesn't make much difference. i think it might be Baker that goes instead though. he's basically what Miles is supposed to be, the platoon partner for Fontenot and back-up 3B (aside from Fox).

Why do you think Rothschild can make any difference? Why is there necessarily anything that needs to be worked on? If it was so easy why do we dread seeing Heilman and Szmardjia?

They could keep him on the DL, they just couldn't continue the rehab assignment. Another possibility has come to my mind, though. Perhaps Blanco or Baker will conveniently become "injured" and get placed on the DL, to be acivated when rosters expand in September. That would avoid the need to send anybody down.

Why not just send Fuld back down? They can do so without risking losing him, and they can find others to fill-in the OF for a while.

they probably will either now or when Soto gets activated. either way, a decision has to be made on Miles/Blanco/Baker/Hoffpauir before the end of the week I guess. i can't imagine they'd go with 11 pitchers again with very few off-days coming up after Thursday.
