maybe they're on suicide watch because they just realized that they live in st. louis, and it sucks.

Besides all the Cardinal fans - I kinda like it here.

i thought it was really boring there.

It's actually not that bad. Strip away your Cardinal hatred and the city is actually pretty good when compared to other midsize non-coastal metropolitan areas. It's defenitely not Chicago: but I decided to work here for a year over some other choices (staying in Chicago and likely loosing my job vs. St. Louis vs Dallas vs. Atlanta). Plus it's a quick flight or an easy drive back home.

Okay, their downtown has some issues but it's coming around. But there's lots of great neighborhoods and tons of things to do. If there's a city that's ready to really grow after this recession: it's St. Louis.

My list of favorite cities

1) Chicago

2) Minneapolis/St. Paul

3) Denver

4) St. Louis

5) Austin

There's a huge dropoff between 3 and 4 on that list. It's kind of like:

1) Chicago

2) Minny

3) Denver

~~Multitude of other nice cities~~

4) St. Louis

5) Austin

The loss of residents is merely a function of boundary drawing and how St. Louis is configured...unlike most major metropolitan areas, St. Louis City is separate and apart from St. Louis county...areas like Clayton, U-City, Ladue, Creve Coeur, Brentwood, Maplewood, Richmond Heights, and the like are not considered the "city" for census purposes, but for all practical purposes, are part of St. Louis.

I've been here for 10 years...lived in the City during school (CWE), U-City for 5-6 years, and now in Creve Coeur....St. Louis is a nice place...its not a major metropolitan, nightlife center, and there are not a ton of urban dwellers who live their entire lives in apartments and/or condos, but its a great place to work/live/raise a family and has a ton of great stuff to do and areas to go for great food and entertainment...

What sucks is basically all the Cardinal fans.

I've got a buddy in Iraq right now, he's a die hard Cardinal fan, and grew up in St. Louis. He's about as big of a St Louis homer as there is. He went there earlier this year before going back to Iraq, it was his first time there in about 5 years or so. He was pretty adamant that he thought that it's a great city to visit, but no way in hell he'd want to raise his kids there.

I've been living here about 5 years (Grad school) and I'm looking forward to leaving. STL is largely a collection of suburbs clustered around the vacant husk of a metropolitan center. If you head downtown (on a non-game day), the only people you are likely to find are construction workers and transients. Public transportation is lousy and all amenities are found in suburban/highway-side shopping centers. Throw in that violent crime rates are consistently around 3 times the national average (and neighborhoods go from decent to awful in the space of about 3 blocks) and what you have is a pretty lousy town.

St. Louis (metro area) is a nice Midwestern town. I would take it over 90% of the cities on the East Coast.

Chicago is an amazing place to live, and maybe the greatest city in the world depending on how you judge those things. The only major downer is they have a terrible baseball team on the North Side.

Id be banned for saying that at GRB, oh wait, Im already banned for saying less than that :D

Could it be said that Carpenter and Wainwright are 1 of the best 1-2 combinations in the league? Maybe even a close 2nd to Lincecum and Cain.

To date? Maybe. I don't think they are going to be able to keep it up.

Where do you go to grad school?

I agree completely. Chicago is world class. Cardinals fans get mad when I say that because of some misguided baseball=life sentimentality regarding taste in cities.

I think the only thing that could slow them down is a Carpenter injury, which isnt thinking too far out of the box.

Saying Chicago is a better town than St. Louis is worse than calling an established poster a "whiny little [expletive]?"

For someone with over 10000 posts on a similar message board, you really struggle with understanding rules of behavior.

Yup. I choose to live here. It's a fantastic city, and deserves to be mentioned with the great cities of the world.

My little jab at the baby bears is really a compliment to the city. The fans here (which I am a fan of the Bears and Bulls) are loyal to fault sometimes. They (we) love "our guys" and will root for them with only a few exceptions. There are still people calling into sports radio that would prefer Orton at QB because he's a "lunch bucket" kind of guy. Like a lot of cities, I think fans will tolerate average play from their athletes if they think they're the kind of folks they could sit down and have a beer with.

Regarding St. Louis again. It's a nice "big Town" and I enjoyed my time there. The downtown has come a long way in the last 10 years and I hope it continues to stay on the right track. It will never be Chicago, but then again, I don't think you could say that of any US city. In my opinion there are only 2 true cities in the US. New York and Chicago. Everything else is either sprawl or big towns.

Oh, it was a jab at the Cubs, and I shouldn't do that here. It is a Cubs board. But since this is a thread about Cardinal fans on the ledge, and in the General Baseball Discussion (formally the Rivalries) forum I figured I could sneak it in.

Im talking about the comment about Chicago having a terrible baseball team on the North Side, genius.

And its not a big deal in my opinion, I was mainly just kidding around.

Every person from St. Louis I've met feel that Chicago is a great city and love visiting there. The only things they mention as negatives I agree with 100%

-rough winters

-traffic

-parking availability and price

-the boring drive up/back across Illinois.

The only true difference I find are about the teams and their ballparks.

1. San Francisco is a city.

2. I cannot believe two people ranked St. Louis ahead of Austin and no one called them out. Austin is about a gazillion times better than St. Louis. Austin is truly outstanding; and I'm no fan of Texas.

Why would anyone at GRB take exception with you saying the Cubs are terrible?

Anthony Bourdain said that there are only two real cities in America (New York & Chicago), and whatever he says I'm running with! :)

I've been to San Fran and really enjoyed it btw.

1. I was ranking non-coastal cities. San Francisco is world class and that's reflected by the fact that a cardboard box under a highway overpass still sells there for $450,000.

2. Austin is kick ass, but the summers are sheer hell. After a month straight of 90+ degrees and humidity you'll be changing your tune.

Plus it's still in Texas (barely). I hate going to Texas and being reminded every 5 minutes about how they used to be their own country and how great the state is. And Austin has no major sports teams. But to make up for it there's tons of cute women all over the place.

1. Ah, sorry. Retracted.

2. Agree completely about the annoying Texas-hubris (I sometimes have to wonder if it's intentional satire for out-of-staters, it's just so over-the-top as to be almost unbelievable), lack of major pro sports, and the abundance of cute women. I have not been there in the dead of summer, however.
