According to ESPN.com's Tim Kurkijan, the Cardinals are close to acquiring outfielder Matt Holliday from the A's.

Kurkijan, echoed by fellow ESPN.com writer Buster Olney, claims the Cardinals will give up top prospect Brett Wallace plus right-hander Clayton Mortensen and outfielder Shane Peterson. It seems like a very high price to pay for Holliday, an impending free agent who is owed around $6 million for the rest of this season. But, hey, Oakland GM Billy Beane has swindled the Cardinals before and is plenty capable of doing it again.

Oakland/St. Louis = Cubs/Pittsburgh?

According to ESPN, this deal is pretty much done. Holliday for Wallace, Peterson and Mortensen.

I don't think this is a great deal for the Cardinals. They've definitely made themselves better, but they paid a very high price for Holliday. He isn't playing all that well and is a half season rental. I think they would have been better off inquiring about Luke Scott who would have cost them less and is signed for more than half a year.

You haven't been paying attention for awhile.

Yea he still isnt hitting for much power, but hes gotten alot better since April. 872 814 and 976 OPS so far the last 3 months. I think Holliday is more a 850 OPS type guy, than a 900+. Good deal for the Cards as hes better than anything they have right now, but giving up your best prospect for a .5 season rental is always iffy. Granted they will get 2 1st round picks probably, but Wallace wasnt far from the Majors, and with Pujols deal up soon, they need to find as much cheap help as they can so they can keep him.

He's also a very good LF adding to his overall value. Wallace's value was tied to his ability to be able to play a respectable 3b. My guess is that the scouts felt that he wouldn't be able to. He obviously wouldn't have been able to play 1b and who knows about LF. My guess is that the Cards are going back to the 2000-2006 business model. I would expect to see Holliday and DeRosa back next year.

I just dont see the Cardinals paying Holliday 15 million over 4 or 5 years that he is going to ask for.

I'm guessing that's Rotoworld's take on it, but either way.

The Athletics and Cardinals have completed a trade that sends outfielder Matt Holliday to St. Louis in exchange for third baseman Brett Wallace, outfielder Shane Peterson and right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen, sources confirmed to ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

In addition, sources said the Athletics will throw in $1.5 million to the Cardinals.

I wonder if this will light a fire under Hendry's ass like the Sabathia trade did last year

Hendry had the money to finance that fire last year. Now, we need to hope it lights a fire under our players.

And if Troy Glaus returns that is going to be a scary team.

I'm sure he would like to do something, but I don't really see anything out there, at least offensively, that would help. There really isn't room for anyone without moving some players with contracts that other teams are not going to want.

I'm sure it would if Hendry had money to spend.

This sucks. The Cardinals have now made two moves to upgrade their roster. I'm not conceding anything, but this really really sucks knowing that there is little, if anything the Cubs can do to improve.

Oh for fucks sake, this trade isnt 20 minutes old, and ESPN is now talking Holliday up as a "true baseball player", "a student of the game", etc.... Give me a [expletive] break.

So assuming that Glaus comes back, their lineup could be

Rasmus CF

DeRosa 2B

Pujols 1B

Holliday LF

Ludwick RF

Glaus 3B

Molina C

Lugo SS

Damn, Tony wont have to mess around batting the pitcher 8th anymore. This could easily make them the best team in the NL.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is said to be pushing for the deal. Word is, he and pitching coach Dave Duncan were upset over the trade of Duncan's son, Chris, and La Russa stepped up his Holliday request since Duncan was traded without his approval.

Except play closer to their abilities for the next 70 games or however many.

While I am not terribly upset about the deal since I think the Cards paid to much, but it does give the Cards a huge boost on offense. I hope Holliday doesn't find the HR stroke for the rest of this year.

Health and poor hitting has just been the downfall of this team the Cubs this year.

I'd rather take a bet that pigs gain the ability to fly before October
