It'll be that much sweeter to watch the Cards miss the playoffs if along the way they unburden themselves of Brett Wallace and/or other nice prospects for 2 months of Matt Holliday.

He sure isn't going to help them more than Sabathia helped the Brewers last year, and in the end that trade worked out OK from our perspective.

Let these marginal playoff teams from the NLC sell off their future, I say.

I had no idea Holliday was in a contract year.

I generally lurk but have some additional info on this. BleacherReport's article is listed as "previews/predictions" and is not confirmation of a trade. I had to jimmy around on the site a little bit and the main Chicago-related news is the perfect game.

Getting Holliday for a few months, and making the playoffs for Wallace isn't the worst thing in the world for the Cards. If another team signs Holliday this off season, they can get two first round picks in next year's draft, to help replenish the system right away. Wallace is a very good hitter, and advanced, but he's a bad third baseman, and has no real place to play on the Cardinals. And turning him into a corner outfielder reduces his value. Sure OPSing around 850 at third is great, as a corner outfielder, it's good but not special.

I'd rather they get Josh Willingham for lesser prospects, and hold Wallace as a potential piece for Roy Halladay, but not sure that horse hasn't left the barn.

That's more of a prediction moreso then anything. Nothing substantial just repeating what the deal would look like. At this moment I don't see Oakland trading Holliday before next week.

The Cardinals lineup is going to come dangerously close to looking better than that from the '04-'06 era. I guess theres always the wld card and the hope that DeRosa and Holliday skip town as free agents in the offseason.

This sucks. Although I still think Holliday benefitted a great deal from playing at Coors. His numbers this year are good but not close to the ones he was putting up with Colorado.

You're really conceding the division to St. Louis? Really?

According to ESPN, this deal is pretty much done. Holliday for Wallace, Peterson and Mortensen.

Correction here, it should say Shane Robinson instead of Peterson according to one of the sports radio shows down here.

I wish, but all reports are saying Peterson.

Cards Close To Deal For Holliday

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 24 at 10:21am CST]

The Cardinals are close to acquiring Matt Holliday from the A's for Brett Wallace and two other players, according to ESPN.com's Tim Kurkjian. Outfielder Shane Peterson and righty Clayton Mortensen are also headed to Oakland if the deal goes through.

3 guys. I guess now we can only hope that Wallace eclipses all expectation and then some. Of course, he'll be on the A's, so it wont matter.

I don't think this is a great deal for the Cardinals. They've definitely made themselves better, but they paid a very high price for Holliday. He isn't playing all that well and is a half season rental. I think they would have been better off inquiring about Luke Scott who would have cost them less and is signed for more than half a year.

Even if he's had an OPS of .900 over the last few months look at Luke Scott's numbers. He wouldn't have cost Wallace, his contract is cheaper and he's signed for more than half a year. There were much better options for the Cardinals out there like Josh Willingham.

If we get more of our guys to wake the hell up, wre just as good, but weve been waiting all season on some of these guys and its not happening.

Hasn't it been?

Yea he still isnt hitting for much power, but hes gotten alot better since April. 872 814 and 976 OPS so far the last 3 months. I think Holliday is more a 850 OPS type guy, than a 900+. Good deal for the Cards as hes better than anything they have right now, but giving up your best prospect for a .5 season rental is always iffy. Granted they will get 2 1st round picks probably, but Wallace wasnt far from the Majors, and with Pujols deal up soon, they need to find as much cheap help as they can so they can keep him.

He's also a very good LF adding to his overall value. Wallace's value was tied to his ability to be able to play a respectable 3b. My guess is that the scouts felt that he wouldn't be able to. He obviously wouldn't have been able to play 1b and who knows about LF. My guess is that the Cards are going back to the 2000-2006 business model. I would expect to see Holliday and DeRosa back next year.

IIRC, Scott is a horrendous OF.
