Wasn't he in Iowa to be conditioned as a starter? Seems like a desperation move to try to fix the pen to me. Why can't they just dump Patton already, he is useless. I'm guessing Shark will be our 7th inning man the rest of the season.

Ascanio has been struggling quite a bit in his last 7 outings (4 2/3 IP, 8 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 6 K) but I didn't quite expect him to get sent down yet. I guess they got tired of having no 7th inning guy with Guzman down and Ascanio struggling and so decided to try Samardzija once again.

WHY! Ascanio has done a decent job when hes been used, Id rather Hart be the one sent down. Im guessing this wont be for long either since Aram and Guz will be coming off the DL soon? Unless the plan is for Hart to be sent down when Guz is activated.

I really dont mind Shark getting brought up IF its for the rest of the year. Quit jerking him around between starting and relieving.

I hope Ascanio doesn't end up like Cotts - gets everyone out in AAA and throws meatballs or can't hit the zone at the major league level.

It would probably help him if they would have given him regular work instead of doing the normal Cubs thing of pitch 1 day, off 3, pitch another, off 2.

Can someone might tell me what the Cubs see in Patton that makes them sabotage their bullpen for the sake of keeping him in the org? Because if his ceiling is slightly above average middle reliever what they are doing isn't worth it?

Is there something you guys see in him that suggests his ceiling is higher than that? Because it's obvious that he isn't on the roster to aid us in winning a championship this year.

Well seeing how Ascanio has shown the ability to get major league hitters out(right handers are hitting .200 with a .544OPS against him) Id say its safe to assume he wont. Basically Ascanio should have been facing nothing but rightys like Lou lets Marshall only face leftys. Oh wait Roogys isnt an old time baseball term like Loogy is so that cant happen.

Ascanio deserves a spot in this pen over guys like Patton, Hart, and even Heilman right now.

The Cubs front office is full of arrogant old school baseball types that think they found a hidden gem in Patton and are going to prove it to the world no matter how much it sabotages this year's team.

The Patton experiment may just be the most mind boggling thing this organization has done in quite a awhile, and thats saying something. Its ridiculous.

In June Ascanio has had fairly consistent work. He's never been off more than 2 days this month and his games off in between outings have gone 2,1,1,2,0,2,2.

In May it was 1,2,3,2,2. He's gotten pretty regular work.

with patton on the roster, the cubs are essentially playing every game with 24 guys.

How many other high payroll teams are trying to hide a Rule 5 pick up at the back end of their roster?

It's as if the most important thing this season is to preserve Patton's status as a Cub. Forget that there are pennants to be won. We need David Patton!

His usage is 05/28 then off till 05/31. He then didnt pitch again until 06/07 when he pitched 3 innings of really good ball. Then wasnt used till 6/11, which is understandable given he pitched 3 innings on the 7th. He then pitched 6/13, and wasnt seen again till 6/17. Then pitched on back to back days on the 20th and 21. He then pitched on the 24, and then next on the 27. Not a real consistent pattern of usage in my opinion.

However regardless of the usage pattern, Ascanios numbers vs RH hitters are very damn good. Hes been hit hard by leftys, but his stuff is good. I trust him more vs RH hitters than I do Hart, Patton, or Heilman. He definately shouldnt be facing any leftys with a game on the line, but thats why you have Marshall. Ascanio deserves to be in this bullpen.

With the exception of the game he pitched three innings in, he was off about 2-3 days between most of his starts. That's pretty consistent.

I agree that Ascanio deserves to be up. I really like his potential.

Didn't Patton come from the Rockies? Wherever he came from I can see an organization getting upset at losing him as he has decent stuff. I wonder if the Rockies got a Cubs farmhand in the Rule5 draft recently and this was payback. That is completely a guess and I doubt it's at all true or close to reality, but that is the only reason that I can come up with to explain the Patton scenario and - yes it does feel like they are willing to sacrifice the pen this year to do whatever they can to keep Patton around for the full year.
