Pedro Martinez Worked Out For Rays, Cubs

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [June 11 at 8:03pm CST]

8:03pm: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that "a source close to Pedro Martinez indicated" that the Chicago Cubs have watched Martinez throw as well. According to Cafardo, the source indicated that "both teams have begun to at least explore how much money it would take" to add Martinez to their rosters.

Nothing against Pedro, but if they're really considering Pedro, they really have no clue as to what our needs are.

Why is it bad for them to watch him throw? He might be usefull in the bullpen. It's not like signing Pedro would prevent them from some magical move to fix the offense.

Depending on how much monet they have or dont have, it could. I highly doubt Pedros going to sign for cheap just to play.

If you can't add more runs, add some run prevention. There don't seem to be any good options as far as trades to make a big impact on the offense, so why not try to improve where you can and hope guys start hitting. Now, maybe Pedro sucks at this point, but what's the harm in looking?

Pedro for closer?

This was my initial thought. Theoretically it may be the only bullpen role that he would agree to (I'm just speculating, he may jump at a bullpen role either way).

If nothing else it could change the dynamics of this current team and get the attention off of the offense and its struggles. Plus, it would rid Gregg of the closer spot. It's probably just a pipe dream, but it would certainly be interesting to watch.

Carfardo adds that Martinez was throwing his fastball at around 94 mph

This is the part that has me intrigued. I'd love to add Pedro if he's throwing that well.

he can't possibly hit any worse than the guys we're running out there now. . . . the pitching ability is just gravy.

And if he is only going to be out there for 1, 2, innings max (assuming we would use him in the bullpen). He should be able to keep his FB in the low/mid 90's and his breaking stuff should be a bit crisper. I think he could at least be an adequate 7/8 inning reliever if not a above average closer.

There isnt a chance in hell Pedro is going to sign with any team that wants to put him in the bullpen, forget about it people.

I dunno if I would say that. Neither one of us know Pedro... but I could see how going this long without a deal could change his demands. Maybe in his mind, he's thinking he'll start in the pen, pitch well, and get moved to the rotation.

It just doesn't make sense that Hendry would be wasting his time trying to improve our rotation. Then again, something doesn't have to make sense for Jim Hendry to be involved. I guess he could be planning to move Wells to the pen... but until the guy stops throwing lights-out baseball, you can't really do that.

It's not likely that Harden or Zambrano are going to be healthy the rest of the year. It's also not likely that Wells will continue to be as good. If Pedro is still unsigned when one of the above happens, he'd be a decent option. Wells could be a decent arm in the pen. Or you could then perhaps trade Marshall and/or Wells for offense.

If any pitcher is replaced in the rotation for any reason by Pedro, I predict that Sean Marshall trades himself.

Isn't part of the reason Pedro is still unsigned that he a) wants to start and b) wants millions of guaranteed dollars?

Thats got to be the problem with a lot of these guys. If guys like Pedro, Durham, and Edmonds were willing to sign 1 year deals, theyd probably have jobs, especially with so many teams in need of offense, but they probably think they're still worth a 2 year 12-15 mil deal, so teams are passing.

If he signs, this smacks of typical Cubs: Sign a player who used to be good years after he ceased being even the least bit effective.

Yeah. Like the terrible Jim Edmonds signing last season.
