I could see him retire in 5 years, especially if he continues to have little injuries every season. Looking at his career arc the safe money is that his best years are behind him even though he is still young, sort of a Livan Hernandez type path. Probably something that could be blamed on Dusty abusing him early in his career only he managed to come out of it without a major arm injury. Five years is a long time though and things can change so obviously this is just all talk right now.

In a sport where players tend to overstay their welcome, I find it hard to believe that the Raging Bull will be gone in five. Its possible, and as a previous poster noted, I believe that Zambrano believes that right now, but in a few years time I think his competitive spirit will keep in him in the game for at least another five years after that. I just hope its in a Cubs uniform.

It would be a shame. He's one of the guys who could if everything went right get to 300 wins. Still unlikely as it is for anyone 1/3 of the way there but he is still just 28.

Obviously very simplistic, but taking all players in the active top 100 list (55 wins), and assuming 15 wins per season, here are the pitchers who would reach 300 at the youngest age:

Note, I gave each on the list 5 more wins to get through this season. Also, I kept Moyer in there artificially.

Jeff Suppan making that list is just so absurd that I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight!

Pretty surprised to see Garland towards the top too though I guess it makes sense, I just don't think of him as a future 300 guy at all.

This smacks of Zambrano using "missing his family" as an excuse to vent against perceived slights against him.

"You don't like me? I'm going to take my ball and go home in 5 years" seems more plausible to me. Did Z not realize that Mother's Day was during the baseball season? Maybe he should have checked his day planner. If he misses his family so much, have them join him during the season. I think Z makes enough to afford lodging for his family.

Z needs to shut up and grow up.

On 1 hand, yeah, growing up from his humble beginings, I could see him intending to retire back to Venezuela and living like a king in his ealry 30's, but on the other, it brings me back to 2007 before he got his big contract and we was refering to his "new catcher, Yadier". Its hard to tell wit him.

the only way he stays retired, should he retire, is if he gets into something else. Venezuelan pro wrestling?

Maybe he could run for Venezuelan Presidente

Early in his career Walter Payton also talked about having a short career. He changed his mind, and I anticipate Z will as well.
